Folder with! icon, cannot reset or restore in iTunes or Windows

When I turn on the iPod, I have the Folder icon. I can hear the hard drive spin up smoothly for a second or two then it goes silent. When connected to the PC the iPod screen shows connected for a split second then immediately goes to the OK to Disconnect but iTunes never recognizes it. When not connected to a PC the apple logo comes up then it just goes to the folder icon for a few seconds then the screen goes blank. I can see the battery icon when connected to the PC and it is fully charged.

When I try connecting it to my PC to Restore, it is not recognized in iTunes or PC and sometimes I get a message on my PC saying that the USB attachment ( i.e. iPod) is not recognized and Windows 7 Portable Devices WPD Filesystem Volume Driver portable device cannot be started. Other times when the iPod is connected to the PC there are no USB connection errors and the Windows 7 Portable Devices show a volume E:\ but the volume is not readable by Windows but still no recognition in iTunes.

I have tried different usb ports and a firewire connection to no avail. What could be causing this? Is it the logic board? Hard drive? Something else? Any solutions or suggestions to remedy this would be appreciated.

Have you tried a different computer? Different cable, checked your iPod dock connector? Right now it sounds like a bad HDD but needs to be a bit further investigated :-)

I have tried different, computers and cables both USB and firewire. I have several iPods and computers all seem to work except this one iPod. I have put the iPod in diagnostic mode and all the HHD tests do nothing because the drive is not spinning. It's not that they fail it's that the test cannot be run. The fact that I can hear the hard drive spin up for a second or so two or three times during boot up but does not continue to spin leans me towards a controller issue with the logic board. Wouldn't the HHD not spin at all or make clicking sounds if it were a bad hard drive?

Yes, it could make those noises, but I have multiple of those drives laying around that truly just died. I went ahead and purchased a USB adapter off ebay to connect the HDD's directly to my computer, that is what enabled me to determine if it was the drive or the board. Luckily, 99% of the time, it was the drive.

I received my parts today, 32GB CF card and CF to iPod adapter. Installation took about twenty minutes including restoring the iPod. The hardest part was opening the case. All works perfectly now and I have more storage and less of a drain on the battery.

Thanks again for your input.

Thanks for the input. I will start with replacing the drive. Maybe I'll convert it to a CF rather than installing another hard drive.
