Why ipad Air won't turn on unless I first chill it in the freezer?

I tried the two and three button methods and neither worked. The only thing that works is sticking it in the freezer for about 15 minutes. Once it turns on, it's fine, however if turned off, it won't turn on again without chilling it. Is this due to a faulty temperature sensor? If so, can that be replaced? Is the temp sensor part of the battery? The ipad is close to 4 yrs old now.
