What do the gold pins on the dock connector do?

Hi,

I have been given a iPad 2 that had a smashed digitizer and a ruined display. It still worked well. When I removed all of the shattered glass I noticed that the dock connector has 2 gold pins that can be pushed down. They feel like they are on springs. What do they do? Do they need to be pushed down in order for the iPad to function? I have looked everywhere but it seems that nobody has even noticed these before.

Any help would be great.

Thanks.

The gold pins make contact with the back of the home button control board when the iPad is assembled. You can see the contacts on the back of the home button assembly in this guide.
