forgot to transfer the hard drive emi foam

So about two months ago my iMac's hard drive dies so I replace it; no problems, easy enough. Been using it for the past two months or maybe more perfectly fine; still no problems.

And today I look at the old one sitting on my desk and see the EMI foam is still on it.

Is this important? What purpose does it really serve.

I know about EMI but I've never herd of a computer needing one little tiny square of foam on it's hard drive to protect it. I've only ever seen a problem from having 50+ computers all with open cases next to each other, and space heaters. So is it really worth taking it all apart again to stick the foam on the new HDD?

Thanks in advance

nah, it's not that foam. I remembered to put the heat sensor on the new HDD, it's in like a little plastic clip/cradle. http://i.imgur.com/HTvAs.jpg That is the form I forgot to transfer. I've dealt with a lot of hard drives but only the iMacs seem to have it. The only thing that worries me is that all the iMacs have it except for mine now :p But right now my HDD is reading 23C so it's not temperature I'm worried about. I'm just curious if that little piece of "emi foam" actually does anything to the point where it is worth opening the iMac back up to put it on. Thanks for your time an answers. Let me know once you look @ that picture.

That foam is used to help hold the heat sensor in place. If you have it well secured you probably don't need it. If your fans start racing, I would replace it.

Hard drive temperature fluctuates; 19C after sitting off all night, 23C after light use, 30C after moderate use, 35C after heavy use. Once it's been on for a while it's always a solid ~33C (somewhere around there). Temps are stable and I use SMC fan control to bump the default speeds up a hair.

That piece of foam helps stop hard drive vibrations from resonating through the frame.

Really? Is the hard drive really likely to make the iMac shake or is it more of the hard drive's own safety? I'm just trying to gather enough information about this to weigh up if it's worth the teardown to put that foam on. When I put the HDD in the iMac, that cradle it goes in. Seems pretty night. I don't thank that foam is touching anything like a bumper/buffer.

Do you think I'll be all set going without it or should I take the iMac apart and add it? I know ultimately it's my decision on how much work I want to do but I'm just curious of your opinion. What would you do?

If you get no vibration or noise when the machine is on, I wouldn't bother.

Thank you much. My iMac is not shaking and bouncing around, or even lightly vibrating at all. It just rocks :p

I'll keep that foam in case I'm back into it then I'll stick it on. It seems fine to leave it off to me if it's just for vibration and not really EMI protection. The iMac's hard drive is pretty secure within it's cradle.

Thanks again

the foam pad with the shiny outer edges is grounding. they say it in their take-apart video for replacing hard drive.
