Laptop crashes while waking from sleep while on battery

Hi folks - I recently replaced my laptop battery on the hp spectre x360. Battery seems to do fine while the computer is up and running - steady orange light when it is charging, steady white light when it is full. However, when I boot from shutdown or wake from sleep, it shuts down and won't start up when on battery power - I need to be plugged in for that. It crashes just as it is waking up.

HP Hardware Diagnostics and Windows power diagnostics aren't turning up anything, and no updates to the firmware from what I can see in the device manager. At my wits end, any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

This is identical to what’s happening with my spectre, not long after update to windows 11, I also replaced my battery just after it started to happen.

Hi @aidanoneill ,

Just to check that the battery is OK create a battery report to check its status.

When you have the report, compare the Design Capacity value versus the Full Charge Capacity value. For a good, new battery they should nearly be the same.

If the report shows that it is OK try uninstalling the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery driver in Device Manager, restart the laptop and let Windows reinstall it and check if that resolves the problem.

To get to Device Manager, press the Win key + x key (both together) and click on the Device Manager link that is in the options box that opens.

When in Device Manager scroll down to the Battery category, click on the > symbol to expand the list, right click on the Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery entry and click on Uninstall device and follow the prompts.

Then restart the laptop in the normal manner

Hey @jayeff - thanks for the quick reply, appreciate you. Design capacity and full charge capacity are identical on the report. Went ahead and reinstalled the driver via the device manager and laptop is still shutting down. Any other ideas?

Try turning off fast startup and see if that resolves the problem.

Press the Win Key and x key (both together) and click on the Power Options link

When in Settings > Power and Sleep, click on the Additional Power settings link on the right side of the page

When in Power Options window click on Choose what the power buttons do.

In the Power Options > System Settings window click on Change settings that are currently unavailable.

Uncheck Turn on Fast startup (recommended) and then click Save.

Close all the open windows and restart the laptop in the normal manner and check

Tried! No luck still. On Win 11 if that matters at all

Best I can think of is to uninstall the display adapter drivers in Device Manager restart the laptop and then let Windows reinstall them and check.

Go to Device Manager > Display adapter > right click on the display adapter entry and click on Uninstall device and follow the prompts.
