Control display dies, nothing but lights working, weak cooling prior

Ok this is strange. Had a fridge-not-cool-enough issue. Before i even got to troubleshoot the usual steps i decided to leave fridge unplugged overnight. Next morning lo and behold nothing starts. main control screen dead, no compressor, no fans, nothing but lights working inside.

I did find lots of water coming from drain hose so evaporator coils mustve been iced over. The defrost heating element has no continuity and looked like crap. Defrost thermostat looks ok. The compressor starter relay is ok, 8 ohms, no capacitors blown, board looks fine, has some voltages no relays clickin. I cleaned condensor coils but cant test much else without cutting wires and don't understand how the whole thing just stopped working after unplugged. Please help what could be going on.

Hi @razvanandr31798

Without a working control panel, it could be the control board but to really know you would need the mini manual i.e. service manual to help track down exactly where, as it would have the wiring diagram, diagnostics etc .

The manual's part # is GE 31-51706 but I can't find a free download online. You may have better luck.

You can buy it from here though. I realize that it shows a different refrigerator model but the mini manual is the same one for both models.

If the main board is not getting power would that pretty much mean the main is toast? I actually replaced the main once when water dispenser stopped working...what a pos fridge

You said that "....board looks fine, has some voltages...." so maybe something on the board has failed but is not obvious.

Having no display panel power is a bad sign as no doubt its power is supplied by the main board.

The lights working can be misleading as it just proves that there's power connected to the refrigerator.

A lot of the time the lights are fed directly from the power cord input via the door switches and then a signal lead is tapped off them to connect to the control board so that it knows when the door is opened e.g. lights turn on due to door switch operating when door is open, so current flows through the light and switch, this is detected by the control board on the connected signal lead and it knows to turn off the evaporator fan if it is operating. Same when door is closed, lights off, no current flow, evap fan turned back on.
