My iPhone 7 plus is water damaged, what to do?

Block Image

My iphone 7 plus is water damaged from washing it. I did it because my speaker wasnt working, i thought my iphone 7 plus is water resistant so i tried to wash it from a tap for a few seconds. It worked fine initially, but its now stuck in a boot loop and something in the screen is spreading. What do i do????

Hi,

The phone has an IP68 rating but that was when it left the factory.

Normal usage over time may have introduced small bends, cracks etc in the case which might allow water to penetrate.

The impurities in the water causes corrosion and provides circuit paths for the electricity which were not in the phone's operating design and could damage the components. The corrosion starts immediately and is ongoing until it is completely cleaned away

First do not try to charge or to turn on your phone and then remove the battery as soon as possible from the phone to minimize any further damage.

Then you need to dis-assemble the rest of the phone and clean all the affected parts using Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ (available at electronics parts stores) to remove all traces of corrosion and water. If possible do not use "rubbing alcohol" as in some cases this is only 70% IPA or less, can contain additives and is not as effective. If you do have to use it check the label to verify the amount of IPA. The higher the percentage of IPA the better

Here is a link that describes the process. Electronics Water Damage

As always with electronics, especially surface mounted pcb be gentle when handling and especially when brushing away the corrosion. You do not want to remove any components from the board. Remove the shields that may be covering some components as the water may have got in under there. The ends of any flex cables and their connectors need to be cleaned as well

Hopefully after you have done all this the phone might possibly work correctly again.

Here is the ifixit iPhone 7 Plus guide that may help.

If this process seems too daunting, take your phone to a reputable, professional phone repair service, experienced in liquid damage repair and ask for a quote for a repair. If you decide to do this, do it sooner than later.

I went to a repair shop and they fixed it by just cleaning the inside with pressured air. Unfortunately, this happened at night and i had to wait for ~12 hours for a repair shop to open, in that time, the battery got toasted, the screen got permanent damages, the home button and the haptic engine died. I replaced the screen and the battery and its good again, just without the haptic from the home button and fingerprint reader. Kinda a bummer but its my fault for washing it in tap water. Thank you for your help!

@Jamesed

Tough lesson perhaps but never trust any liquid near an electronic device.

If you wish to clean it buy some Isopropyl Alcohol 99%+ in a spray pack (example only) and then turn off the device e.g. phone, smartwatch, camera etc and spray some of the IPA onto a clean lint free cloth (microfibre cloths are also good to use) to slightly moisten it i.e. not dripping wet.

Then wipe over the device to clean it.

You may have to moisten the cloth a few times as the IPA evaporates quickly.

The beauty of IPA99%+ is that it evaporates quickly and leaves no conductive residues.

When you're satisfied that it is clean allow to to fully dry, if it hasn't already and then turn on the device.

Do not turn it on if it is still wet as the IPA can also conduct electricity when it is still wet

Not only will you have a clean device it is also "germ free" as the alcohol kills all. Handy considering what is occurring around the world with viruses etc.

Cheers

Just don't get ipa anywhere near the screen.

@strongbow

Interesting.

I've been using IPA99%+ (as described above) on average once per week on my Android phone for years with no adverse effects to the display.

As stated the cloth is barely damp and the phone is turned off and not on again until I'm sure that it is dry although it is drying as I'm wiping it over with the cloth

@jayeff you just have to be careful around the ear speaker area. I've seen people try and clean the mesh with ipa and its gone through to the top of the display.
