battery adhesive and 3rd party home button issues (mostly venting tho)

i just replaced 5 iphone 8+ batteries in my family's phones. in EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM the battery adhesive pull tabs stretched about 1/2 inch then snapped which left me nothing to pull on. i had to do the 99% IPA and slow pry to get the batteries out. I've replaced dozens of batteries this past year and i have never had as much difficulty getting a battery out as i have with the 8/8+/SE2. way to go Apple.

i've also had to replace two home buttons with JC 8.1 3rd party buttons. Touch ID feature is lost - that's expected. Home button functionality works as expected. one 8+ is running IOS 15.7 and the other is IOS 16.2. both of them immediately turned on Assistive Touch. if i moved the on-screen button out of the way, it goes right back to the bottom middle within a minute. if i turn Assistive Touch off, it turns back on almost right away. the home button works, so i don't need Assistive Touch but IOS is probably reading the button as "not Apple OEM" and figures there must be something wrong and turns on Assistive Touch regardless of whether you need it or not.

it almost feels like this is Apple giving the finger to the DIY'ers and the right-to-repair movement.

Rant over, but i'm interested in hearing comments.

Cheers

Hi B C,

  1. Home Button Swap: This issue is very common when replacing any screen from the iPhone 5s on and I have dealt with this problem. It can usually be solved by just swapping the non-OEM home button with the OEM one found on the broken screen. If the home button on the original screen is not broken, you could just swap both of the home buttons for what should be a fully functional home button. Here is a guide to do so, iPhone 8+ Home Touch ID Sensor Replacement
  2. Screen Programming: If you were really desperate to get True Tone functionality on your iPhone you could buy a programmer that copies the serial number from the old screen onto the new screen the one I have found only really works for an iPhone 11 Pro Max and newer unfortunately. Here it is, Screen Programmer

Thanks, Derek Thomas

Hi Derek,

thanks for the info on the button/screen swap. in my case, the OEM button was broken/non-functioning and had to be replaced. only option was 3rd party.

regarding the programmer though, i have questions.

are you saying that even in 3rd party displays, true tone is available, it just needs to be "activated"?

i took a look at that link you sent and saw there is a fingerprint code board. does this mean that you can take a 3rd party button and make the motherboard accept it for Touch ID? or will it only do with with another Apple/OEM button?

do you know us any US based suppliers that carry this item?

@beekerc I don't know exactly but I am pretty sure the product doesn't have to be OEM. I would guess this since the programmer just reads the old screen's data and writes it to the new screen. The one I have linked above only can do the iPhone 11 pro max and newer I think for the True Tine but it can do a multitude of other models for other problems such as batteries, Touch ID, and Dot Projectors.

Here is one that I found on amazon that is cheaper but not as capable

Here is the one that I have linked above on eBay

@Derek Thomas

looking at the JC v1SE features, i think the biggest side board i'd be interested in is the Fingerprint and battery. as of now, i'm only working with 6 through SE2020 iphones. if it can transfer the OEM home button serial number to a JC home button such that IOS 15.7+ won't turn on Assistive Touch uninvited, i'll consider that a win.
