One single purple line on the screen and battery ko

Goodevening,

I try to write in English: a friend of mine gave me its macbook pro A1502 because he has some strange problems with it. A vertical purple line appeared after the "complete" format of the system to restore the latest version of OSX compatible with this laptop (Catalina) and, in the meantime, the battery appears to be completely death (if I detach the magsafe charger, the computer stops immediately to run). Using Ubuntu, before the format of the system, the purple line seemed not to appear (I remember this particular): I opened the macbook and it doesn't appear water damaged, both for screen and for battery plug. I tried to re-install Ubuntu (22) and the line remains on its place...any idea? Is there any test that I can do? Can I try to change the display cable?

Waiting for your answers, thanks in advance.

Andrea

This is what I can see on the screen: it seems that the purple line "changes" its colour near other pixels which should be, for example, white or light blue. Any idea?

I tried all the tricks and no one worked unfortunately...I am looking to the line and it seems that it changes a little bit colour, according to the background image; exactly, in the first hours I saw it, it appeared to be purple, but now it has a colour mix similar to the background image I had on linux ubuntu distro.

Here the report proposed by coconut battery:

@ilgaglioffo sounds like a display instead of an OS issue. Post some pictures of what your screen shows you, with your QUESTION. iFixitでの質問に画像を追加する方法

@oldturkey03 - Andrea has two issues: battery/charger & the display.

To work the 1st we need macOS so we can use CoconutBattery to get the batteries status and the batteries charging.

さんによる

@oldturkey03 Thanks, I added a photo; I am re-installing OSX in the meantime.

@ilgaglioffo a new battery and a new display is all you need to be back in business with your MBP. Best of luck!

You really need to install macOS so the tools we use will work. Or, create a macOS external drive using another Mac system to then boot up under it.

As an example we use this great tool to investigate battery & charging issues CoconutBattery

Take a snapshot of the apps main window with the battery tab out and post it here for us to see.

As far as the line, use a camera to take a physical picture and post it here as well so we can get a better idea what’s happening.

Update (12/23/2022)

@ilgaglioffo - Well the battery is in trouble! Between the cycle count and it’s age it’s time to be replaced. The battery temp sensor is stopping it from charging as it thinks the battery is too hot. Hopefully replacing the battery will fix that. Here’s the needed part MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Late 2013-Mid 2014) Battery and here’s the guide MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014 のバッテリーの交換

That should fix the power issues.

The display issue is a misbehaving signal line. Here we have a vertical line that has a break we often call this a TAB error. This is the point the signals from the LCD panels glass surface are converted to a flexible cable (ribbon cable) this intersection can break apart across multiple points when a panel is hit physically, here it’s likely just a weak attachment which too years to let loose fully.

Some times putting slight pressure on the bottom edge of the display can push the break back together so the line disappears. Don’t press to hard and use a motion left to right and back. If that fails you will either need to live with it or replace the assembly MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Late 2013-Mid 2014) Display Assembly and here’s the guide for that MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Mid 2014のディスプレイアセンブリの交換

Do keep in mind the costs to fix both issues, as well as your pocketbook and skills. While this is still a great system it might be better to get a newer model either used or new.

Update (12/23/2022)

@ilgaglioffo - Nothing complex just rub the bottom edge as I’ve marked here in Yellow

Thanks @danj : tomorrow morning I will try to installa again OSX. Something about the screen issue? I should try to order the LCD cable on Aliexpress to try to fix the problem...

さんによる

@ilgaglioffo - Retina systems use a different signaling (iDP/eDP) from the older LVDS systems.

The best way to think it is how our analog TV’s had ghosting and lines unlike todays TV’s which are digital which doesn’t get these issues.

Basically, this is not a cable issue

さんによる

Do you suggest to try to change the cable of the screen? Is it possible to publish a link to an external site, for it, because I think it is not available on ifixit? Thanks in advance for your detailed help!

さんによる

@ilgaglioffo - Sadly, this ribbon cable is bonded to the glass LCD panel. If you have the skills to glue an empty egg shell back together without any errors then you have the skill. For most of us including me that’s impossible! This is the same.

Try the Massage trick I’ve saved a few that way or at least delayed the inevitable need to replace the display assembly. Or, you may need to live with it until you have the needed funds.

Sorry for the bad news at least it is repairable! If you’re set, don’t forget to score the answer and accept it - Thanks!

さんによる

@danj I dont' want to exagerate on asking the next detail, but...can you show me a picture on what part of the screen do I need to "massage"?

Thanks in advance and...Happy XMas :D
