Black LCD after boot screen (Replacement LCD).

I just replaced the LCD Screen on my MacBook Pro (A1151), following the ifixit guide. My issue is as follows:

The replacement screen I purchased (Samsung LTN170WP-L02 WSXGA+ (1680x1050) is supposed to be a direct OEM replacement for the original LG Screen (LP171WE2 TL A2); however, it apparently is not. Both are WSXGA+ (1680x1050) CCFL.

The apple boot screen comes up, but when OSX boots the screen goes black.

The back light works.

External Monitor works.

Is there a driver that needs to be installed or do I need to purchase the original part?

Please give a link to the place you got it from and where the replacement screen is reputed to work with your machine. Thanks

one of several sites showing "compatible" OEM replacement parts:

Purchased from Kedacom/ Vista PCS (San Pedro, CA) via Ebay

I have decided to bite the bullet, and chalk this up to a learning experience. I just ordered the original part LP171WE2(TL)(A2).

As I have been told by my father:

"Some people learn by being told or by reading,

some people need to be shown,

still others have to pee on the electric fence for themselves."

This is a curious problem - especially after the SMC, PRAM reset. I see the Samsung LTN170WP-L02 being sold as a replacement LCD for this MBP at a number of places. I see the LP171WE2 TL A2 being sold at a number of places for this MBP. I have not been able to acquire the data sheets for either of them yet. I've never met your father, but I like his way of thinking. I've acquired knowledge from all the sources he mentioned. If I come across the data sheets I will post what I found out here, for future knowledge.

*I believe I found the answer. The second screen sent to me (after I ordered an exact replacement) was still a Samsung replacement. I called their customer service, they are now sending an LG replacement. At issue is the EDID chip. The "compatible" screens may or may not have one, and if they do, the firmware may or may not be copied over from the original screen type.

*EDID stands for Extended Display Identification Data. It is defined by the Video Electronic Standards Association (VESA) and is used as part of an interface between a source device and a display monitor.

*When purchasing a replacement screen, make certain that the screen not only matches in dimensions, resolution, and lighting type, but also whether or not it needs the EDID chip.

@Matt

So did you get the replacement screen to eventually work? I purchased my replacement and got the Samsung LTN170WP-L02 WSXGA+. Like you mentioned it's the same exact size but the board on the LCD is obviously different so I'm a bit worried to put it together and it not work.

Chris, The new screen (Mac Standard) worked fine. The issues with the previous screens was the EDID chip (as I stated earlier). The only drawback with this screen that it is starting to have issues after only 1 yr in service.

Indeed the Samsung LTN170WP-L02 in not compatible. I encountered the same issue as the original poster after ordering a screen off of Amazon.com. After troubleshooting for a couple of days I came across this website and posting. I was able to order another LCD from a different supplier and return the first one to Amazon. I contacted the second supplier first and verified the maker of the LCD and they verified that it was not Samsung, it was an LG. The new LG screen arrived, I installed it and the issue was no longer there. The screen fired up with bright beautiful colors, even brighter than the Samsung initially fired at. So, my suggestion is to verify that you are not getting a Samsung replacement unless it is a LTN170P2-L01, as that was the original that came out of my A1212.

I've seen similar problems here on iFixit. The first place to start is by resetting your SMC and PRAM - may solve the problem. You can find instructions for doing that if you Click here and click here. If that doesn't solve your problem you will need to back up your data, format your hard drive using the write zeros option, then reinstall OS X.

If the Apple boot screen is showing properly on the LCD/screen then this shouldn't be a hardware problem, unless it is heat related - hardware works or it doesn't. The problem should be surrounded around OS X not knowing the correct LCD controller chip, thus not communicating with it properly. When you reinstall OS X it will take an inventory of installed hardware - including the LCD/screen and communicate with it properly.

Thanks for the info,

I'll try resetting the SMC and PRAM tonight.

I won't be able to do a backup and reinstall until later this week.

Will keep you updated.

Reset the SMC and PRAM (following instructions): Result: 1 step backwards - now the boot screen does not show up on the LCD (will show up on the external), the back-light still works. I suppose I'll have to go for a new OS reinstall. Time to pull my RAID out of the safe deposit box.

OUCH - Try booting to option, to see if you get the menu on the LCD. I've made a few searches to come up with the datasheets for both LCDs - no luck yet. In the process of trying to find the datasheets I've come across a number of sites saying that Samsung will/does work with your laptop. Why did you replace the LCD to begin with? Do you still have the old/original one?

さんによる

None of the boot options bring up the onboard display (only the external when connected). I still have the original. I replaced it due to it going out on me (horizontal lines on bottom 1/4 of display).
