I can't figure this out

My fridge is a GE Model No GSH25KGRE WW

Symptoms:

  • Compressor running but freezer fan (evaporator fan?) is not
  • Evaporator fan (..freezer fan) running but compressor is not

Things I've tried/Tested:

  • Had two repair guys come, first one replaced the circuit board, second one sprayed WD40 on the freezer fan (no, I'm not joking) and then charge me out the a$$.
  • I replaced the Start Relay myself, and tested the Overload and Start Capacitor, both of which were good
  • Condenser fan runs like it should
  • Compressor checks out
  • Circuit board shows no bad signs

I am facing a similar problem and I don't know where to report it. Please let me know if anyone has found any solution. I will be very thankful.

@wordcounter

Post a new question on ifixit giving relevant info i.e. make and model number of refrigerator, state problem and what you've tried (this is to avoid getting answers which suggest what you have tried to do already to fix the problem and it didn't work).

Did your problem has the same complication a explained by the earlier one. My problem is exactly same but the abnormalities I noted are quite different. And I am not sure what to do with it. Do I have to share my problem here (as I see the other ones have not been solved yet), or do I have to contact the community, directly? Please help me. Thank you already.

Hi,

Wonder if it is a problem with one of the door switches in the refrigerator, but this doesn't explain the fan on when the compressor is off

The evap fan is turned off when a door (either door) is opened as you don't want to blow cold air out but the compressor is left running. The fan starts again when the door is shut.

Manually operate/release the door switches with a door open and check if the lights turn off and on and the fan turns on and off

Here's the wiring diagram that may help as well.

So the lights do go off on both sides when I manually push the door switches. However, there's been times when I've opened the freezer door and the evaporator fan and compressor are going full blast. It is an old fridge

@Luke Bray

Does the evap fan turn off/on (if the compressor is running) when the switch is released/operated?

It is the door switches that lets the control board know that a door is open or not.

If it happens more often when only the freezer door is opened, I would still check out the freezer door switch (example only) for corrosion etc.

This switch is different to the refrigerator door switch in that it has a changeover contact set i.e. make and break, and not just a single make contact set.

Disconnect the power to the refrigerator and remove the freezer door switch and disconnect the wiring harness from it then use an Ohmmeter to make sure that the switch is functioning correctly and that there is 0.00 Ohms i.e. short circuit between two contacts and not the 3rd when operated and then between the 3rd contact and one of the first two but not the other when released.

In the wiring diagram it is shown as the "freezer door interlock" whereas the refrigerator door switch is shown as the FF switch
