Changed battery in 3GS, getting error 29 even with 0435 battery D:
I wiped my 3GS and installed a new battery (the original battery's APN: 616-0431), but as I was trying to install the latest iOS, the phone started rebooting every few minutes.
I took the new battery out and tried a *different* new battery, but I found myself faced with a persistent error 29. I tried:
- Using iRecovery to issue a 'setenv auto-boot true' command
- Holding down the home button while plugging in the USB cable
- Clearing out the hosts file
Finally I found one of iFixit's error 29 threads and assumed that I must have the wrong battery, so I ordered an iFixit battery with APN: 616-0435.
No dice, unfortunately. I can't get this thing to work. Do I need to jailbreak it or something? I've seen several forum threads mentioning redsnow and pwnagetool, but I've never jailbroken a phone and have no idea where to start.
Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.

reidman, try iRecovery first and see if you can kick your phone out of the recovery loop. Download it from here and follow the instructions. Hope this helps, good luck.

I appreciate the tip oldturkey, but unfortunately I already gave that a shot -- no luck :(

I am sorry, I did not realize you had tried that already. In that case definitely follow what pollytintop suggest. Good Luck and let us know how it turns out.
