Drop my MacBook. USB port dead with message "USB accessories disabled"

Hi Guys.

I accidentally drop my macbook and dented the right hand side of it. The right USB port is dead and I got the message "USB Accessories Disabled - Unplug the accessory using too much power to re-enable USB devices". Sometimes the message shows up, sometimes it's not. The SD and HDMI port are working normally though.

I noticed a few things:

  • For some random days, I put it on sleep mode at full battery but after 2 or 3 days without any usage, the battery is fully drained.
  • The battery sensor shows that the battery temp goes to approx 37-39 deg C. While on another same macbook of mine, it hardly goes above 31 deg C.

Following some search on google, I decided to buy a new right I/O board hoping it would fix but it did not. Does anyone know how to fix this? I can do some general replacement, but I am not an electronics guy.

I attached here some photos, including the I/O board and the damage. Thanks!

You'll got some work here ;-{

The best answer is first replacing the uppercase as you can't use the ports in this state and reforming the case will more than likely crack it and given the location the hinge it won't be nice. You also need a new bottom cover.

You may need some other parts as well, but you need to have a working case first.

Thanks! The case is dented but I am able to plug the USB inside. Do you think the case is the reason for the USB port malfunction?

The cost to replace the case is about 50% of the resale value, so I think it doesn't worth it. Do you have any other idea?

@nganh - The case is so distorted the logic board can't be held properly and the twisting of the port is also shorting things out. Sadly its time for a new case. I don't look at things strictly by the artificial values people place on things. An old 2000 car which is well taken care of still has more value than the BlueBook assigned value. Does the system when working do what it needs to do? Then its worth fixing!

Besides we need to get out of the habit of throwing things away that could be fixed! Just look at all of the trash pollution we have piled up just in the last 50 years! We need to be better!!

Hi Dan. Of course I will not throw it into the rubbish bin haha cause I can still use it very well. But the high cost to repair it is not really worth in my opinion since it is just 1 USB port. And it is working fairly normal I would say. If there is any other way to diagnose it with cheaper cost, I will definitely try it out!

The logic board when I did the replacement seemed to be pretty secure. Do you think I can put polyimide tape there to prevent the shorting?

@nganh - This series offers two USB-A ports as well as two Thunderbolt 2 ports as well as a HDMI video port! I doubt you need much more.

I would look on eBay or other marketplace sites I'm sure you can find the case parts locally for less.

The case looks to far gone to trust and using polyimide tape is not really the answer either.

@nganh

I don’t want to sound like I’m interrupting the current conversation but I would straighten the top case out

My 2014 15inch MacBook Pro came to me with a bend that was much much worse than the bend you have(my one was basically a obtuse angle) and it straightened out very nicely

However I do agree with @danj about getting the new parts as bending aluminium can cause some structural complications

If you do decide to do it make sure to remove everything you can before straightening it

Of course if it’s something you don’t like the sound of doing maybe don’t t do it

But it’s entirely up to you:-)

Thanks:-)
