iPhone XS Max camera led flash keeps turning on/off by itself

Hello,

I have Apple iPhone xs max. back glass cracked so tried to repair the back glass by removing the old broken glass using heating gun. I have done this repair previously on another xs max for a family member , it worked perfectly.

This time with my phone, Now I noticed that. When i power on the phone rear camera flash led light comes ON (orange Color), when i press power button, orange led flash come on, then goes off. however when i open the camera app the orange led flash light comes On and stays ON until camera app is closed. Also noticed that Portrait mode camera is not focused as well.

I am trying to diagnosed this issue, if i need to replace the rear camera module, or power flex cable that come with flash? or if its is a logic board problem?

any assistance will be very helpful and appreciated thank you.

You’ve possibly damaged the camera/flash ribbon when digging at the back glass around it. After removing back glass with a proper laser machine I wouldn’t even attempt it with a heat gun. Sounds like a total nightmare.

Hello,

thank you very much for help. Unfortunately, I do not have access to laser machine. its was definitely a challenging task. Everything else works well, except this problem.

I am trying to figure out main cause, today i unplug the connectors for the rear camera and powered on the phone. The led light still behaving same.

I have noticed, even if you dont press the power button, you just tap on screen or pick up the phone as the phone awakes the rear led light flashes yellow.

Seems like it has some kind of connection with power of the phone or sleep awake module.

I did not see the power button/camera flash ribbon on the back of the phone, unless the heat may have caused damaged too? could it be the logic board too?

do you think I should try to replace the Power button, camera/flash ribbon cable to see if it will resolve the issue or you suggest any other testing? thanks again, any helpful input will be appreciated.

@sk128 yes, replace the power/flash flex. The flex could of been damaged when removing the glass around the flash. It’s easily done. I killed the flash on a iPhone 13 even after being lasered so I know lol

@Nigel, You were correct. I replaced the power button/flash flex cable. It fixed the problem of led light flashing. However the back cameras are still bit blurry do you think i should try cleaning camera lens on the housing from the inside? or maybe cameras damaged too that need to be replaced? thanks again for your help.

@sk128, Yes, definitely. It's all too easy to get dust, debris or fingerprints on the camera and/or inside the lens when you've got the phone apart, so it's definitely worth your time to open it back up, pull the rear camera and try cleaning both the camera lens and the case lens from the inside.

If that doesn't work, then at that point you've probably done all that can be done and it may be time to replace the camera. Fortunately the rear cameras aren't part of the Face ID system so buying a new one won't hurt your Face ID.
