Display Replacement from 2016 to 2017

Hi,

My display screen started flickering, loosing and inverting colours until it turned white to a point where it's impossible to see anything.

I don't have warranty anymore and the repair would cost me 800$ .

I know someone who has a MacBook Pro 15" Touch Bar 2016 model A1707 with a functional display (only the logic board is broken).

Is it compatible to switch the 2016 display to my 2017 macbook?

Thanks

Sometimes all you need to do is look at a parts listing as in this case MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2016-2017) Display Assembly Both the A1707 2016 and 2017 Touch Bar systems use the same displays.

Update (08/25/2022)

What is FlexGate?

What is T-CON failure: This is a common one

There are also bad scan marks

Thank you so much!

By any chance do you know if the model 15"2017 A1707 has the flexgate problem? My MacBook doesn't seem to have the same reported issues tho.

This model came with a keyboard problem (characters didn't appear) and was eligible for the Keyboard Service Program from Apple which I only decided to do almost at the end of the warranty (probably a bad idea).

Like 2 months later I started having display issues. It started flickering, color faded (from the outside to the inside creating some kind of a vignette), sometimes the colors appeared inverted and after some time started to fade completely until it turned all white. Took it to an Apple representative, said they had to replace the display which would cost me 800$.

I don't know if it's a coincidence but could it be that the keyboard repair damaged the display? All bottom was replaced because there was a problem with a sound column too, so the display was the only thing that was spared. Strange fact, after returning from the Apple representative, I didn't touch it for some weeks or so. One day I turned on the MacBook and the display was doing just fine! I was really happy but it didn't last long because the problem came back later.... Still I has able to use it for some time.

It's really difficult to accept that I have to pay so much money for such an expensive product that on top of that was barely used.

So I thought of changing the damage display for that used 2016 display with the board broken but I'm afraid it doesn't work...

I'm a bit lost here ... The displays are the same between the 2016 & 2017 systems. So if you need to get your system going that would resolve the display issues if the display was in fact the problem.

But I do wonder if that is your use here with the added info. What happens when you plug in an external display does the problem show up on it?

I'm sorry if it was too much info.

In resume:

1. Do you know if the models (MacBook Pro 15" 2016-2017 A1707) have the flexgate problem?

2. Is it possible that by replacing all of the bottom case damaged the display? This replacement was made in 2021 by an Apple representative under the Apple’s Keyboard Service Program (since the keyboard system was faulty). Basically they gave me a new computer but used my original display (from the MacBook I bought in 2017).

3. Few months later, the display started flickering and color faded to white (means I can’t see anything on the screen, just on an external monitor).

Since I can't afford to pay 800$ I was hoping to replace my damaged display with a working 2016 model display, but I'm afraid it stops working again.

Hope this helps and thanks!

@Rute de Carvalho

1 - Both 13 & 15" 2016/17 systems suffer from the FlexGate issue (see image above for an example of what it looks like)

2 - The bottom case (where the feet are) wouldn't be an issue. But! The Uppercase which holds the keyboard would be the suspect area. I can't speak on how the Apple tech did the swap out. Its possible the flex cable was getting worn and the messing about could have taken it to the failure point.

3 - The flickering and color fade would not be an issue with the backlight flex cable (FlexGate) That cable only offers power to the backlight with a steady white light. Your issue is a bad T-CON board which is part of the display assembly. This element of the display takes the signal from the main logic board translating it to what the LCD panel needs to create the image.

As I stated you can swap out the displays to get your system going! Follow this guide MacBook Pro 15" Touch Bar 2017 スクリーンの交換 As to it having issues with FlexGate that's possible! But it would buy you some time to save up. And to make it last as long as possible review this Vid The Design Flaw Behind MacBook Pro’s “Stage light” Effect!
