Dryer won't turn on after just being on.

If my dryer has been off for a while I can use it fine. However, if I try to use it right away after it just finished drying a load, it won't turn on at all, no errors, just nothing. If I let it sit again for about a half hour, it works again. Is the motor overheating? Or something overheating?

Electric dryers have several self protection features to ensure against electrical fire hazards as well as preventing electrocution. The simple answer may be that restarting the dryer is prevented from a temperature sensor triggering a safety shut off until internal dryer temps drop to allow dryer use. Once cooled and the dryer working again as of nothing broke is similar to my electric dryer. As long as the lint filter is cleaned out before starting a dryer cycle then your dryer seems to be working as designed. In my home, my dryer sits in a closed 2-car garage with a low ceiling and zero ventilation. It will run for less than an hour and shut off prematurely. Experiments shows it can run longer when the door to the basement is opened but still shuts off prematurely. Letting it cool for half an hour lets it run again. Opening the garage door is one solution but in freezing winters. Remember, self protection features preventing any electrical fire hazards and/or overheating for any reason. Better to shut off, be disappointed with partially dried laundry then restart after a cool down period than have a fire from overheating. Venting heated dryer air to outside a home can help as all dryers need fresh air. This includes gas dryers.

Thank you for your response. Checking the lint and vent was the first thing I did even though I empty it after every load. I think the dryer is getting old and perhaps the motor itself is tired and wearing out.

A dryer vent clogged with lint or other obstructions will force the dryer to work harder, causing the unit to overheat. When too much heat builds up in your dryer, lint or debris in the dryer vent line can ignite, resulting in a dryer fire. The overheat shutoff is the dryer's last attempt to prevent a fire. I would pull the dryer and check and clean the vent from dryer to the outside
