What is the usual cause of this phone not switching on?
If a phone doesn't switch on, could it be the display that's dead and not the battery. They don't have lights do they?

Mostly, phones don’t turn on because the battery is dead.
They might also not turn on because they got wet and something inside shorted out.
They might also SEEM like they don’t turn on because the screen has a problem. However, you should be able to make them beep by pushing volume buttons.
