MacBook Pro Service Battery Indicator

Under my battery indicator im getting the message that's saying "Service Battery", if i push i'm getting this message " Service Battery: The battery isn’t functioning normally, and you may or may not notice a change in its behavior or the amount of charge it holds. Take your computer in for service. You can continue to use your battery before it’s checked without harming your computer." Do no answer to have to do anything about other than take i to repair, which takes a whole week, and i can't do without my Macbook Pro especially during this time of the year.

Best Regard Morten St.

At this time my battery does not look like it's all that bad. Because it can hold battery for 2½ - 3½ hours. But I'm looking for replacing it. But my current problem is. Do i give $324 for an original or bye an after market battery $122. What can the problem be with an non-Apple battery.

If your battery works, and you are happy with its performance, there is no need to replace it. You may still have a year or so left in your battery before the charge it retains becomes inadequate. Current versions of the OS give the service indicator when battery statistics reach a certain level, much like a "check engine" light on a car, but there's no risk or danger involved, and as long as you are OK with the possibility that you may need to replace it sooner than later, there's no need to rush out and spend money.

this means your battery needs to be replaced..... you battery will stop working at any time. do not leave you laptop for 5-10 days unused at a low battery then your battery will not recover to this point also. then you cannot use it even for a 10 min. whenever you unplug the charger your system will shutdown...

This is just not true -- it's not going to "stop working at any time". The proper thing to do is download Coconut Battery and see what percentage of the original charge the battery still retains, and if the user decides that is sufficient, then there really is no problem. It's also not true that batteries become unusable after 5-10 days if unused. I buy hundreds of batteries that have been sitting for a year or two and the majority are still good. Your response is going to scare people unnecessarily, and in most cases make them rush out and buy a battery that they don't necessarily need right away.

Simran is right. However do not panic.Your system is not effected as long as you are on AC power.Just keep the power adapter connected .that's all.Change the battery at your first convenient

Guys, read more carefully, Simran said a different thing: "do not leave you laptop for 5-10 days unused at a low battery".

That is: the battery is not broken, but getting old, be more careful about the discharge state, or you will shorten the battery life dramatically.

Why: Batteries for laptops are made of several elements which typically age differently from each other. The battery will last as long as its weakest element will. As the battery has lost a part of its capacity, leaving it discharge too much is more likely to completely drain one of the elements.

Normally the battery control circuit prevents this fully discharged state, forcing a soft or hard shutdown, but this may eventually go undetected and happen if one element is significantly weaker than the other ones, especially if the battery is slowly discharged while the computer is in sleep mode.

Lithium based battery elements, if left completely discharged for some time, they get irreversibly damaged. IF this happens, even only to the weakest element, the battery must be replaced (worst case scenario, it won't hold charge even for 10 minutes).

Advice: don't let the Mac rest with very low battery (the weakest element may get damaged in just a few days) and don't expect that the battery will hold charge for several days of sleep (it will appear to loose 10% or more of its charge each day, instead of 2-3% like when new). Apart from that, you can still use it as long as the weakest element doesn't age so much that it won't hold charge. Plan to replace the battery in the next future (some months, one year? depends on your usage pattern), do not wait until the last minute if you cannot afford to stay without your laptop.
