Screen shows blue instead of black pixels; external display is normal

Hi guys. Not sure if anyone is active on this thread, but here goes. I am having a similar issue with my Macbook Pro 2017 running Catalina 10.15.7.

It seems to appear only in photos (ie not text, videos or GUI elements). It happens in the Finder, Preview, Photos, Safari and Chrome, but doesn’t appear in apps like photoshop and lightroom, which I assume manage colour differently than the system.

It also doesn’t seem to be replacing pure black with the bright blue (like what happens when you use the black pixel identifier in LightRoom), but rather replacing some sort of shade of very dark grey with bright blue.

I realize that this is probably more of a software issue, rather than a hardware issue, so not really an iFixit type of problem. But this was the only thread that I could find that mentioned the same issue.

Update (02/14/2022)

oh I forgot to say, when I boot into safe mode the problem goes away

Does the issue show up on the external as well or just the internal ?
