iMac Keeps shutting Down, after replacing Power Supply

My imac's power supply got damage after a electrical overload, i replaced the power supply and the machine started working but after a few minutes of being working shuts down and i have to wait a couple minutes to try again, giving the same result.

i installed a program to speed up the fan, after that worked for a couple of hours the same thing happened, so now everytime i'm gonna use the imac i have to unplugged all the cables even the power cord, press the power button for ten seconds and reconect all the cables...( 'i don't know how this restart is called') this is annoying and i wanna fix this issue once and for all.. does anyone know what else could be wrong?

Thank you !!

Hello,

When the iMac shuts down, does it go through the shut down process or does it just cut the power almost as if someone is unplugging it. Also feel the back of the unit while it is on and when it goes off. Is it hot to the touch in some areas and if so where. If it is warm at the top that is completely normal as the iMacs cool be convection so naturally hot air rises to the top.

it shuts down normally, it gets hot on the left side of the back..

Did you do a self install of the power supply or did apple install it for you and if you did a self install where did you order the power supply from.

I'm sorry i didn't answer early ...

@owen: i did install it myself i order it from dvwarehouse.com, what i recall is that my old power supply was a 250W and the replacement part was a 240w i don't know if this have something to do with the current problem

mmmm

diagnosis? I mean seems that the replaced part is causing a over heat problem.

So the part could be failure or the replacement did somehow wrong;

I would try to open the iMac and unscrew the power supply and put it again in the same place to see if it was mount not properly.

If not succeded should ask for a replacement to who sold it to you

I concur that the replacement part might not be correct but there's really no way to tell.

However, (I swear I feel like a broken record) if the processor is getting too hot then regreasing it may solve this issue and it only costs $10 for thermal grease.

If a new power supply and thermal grease don't resolve the problem, the power overload may have damaged the system board and that would have to be replaced.

It's also possible there is other damage to the system. Do you have access to any system diagnostic software tools?

Hello Dan, i added more thermal paste to the processor and the problem persist, i'm new mac user so i dont know any system diagnostic software tools, is there any good one out there that can help me have a clear view of what's going on with my system? Thank You !

Dago -

You stated you did put in a smaller wattage power supply (240 Vs 250 which is what it had) To start with I would put back in the same wattage power supply so you should see about exchanging it.

With that said I don't think having a lower wattage power supply could directly explain your heat issue, but it could explain the cutting out as the system may not have enough power for what your asking of it at that moment in time (read/writing to HD or DVD etc...)

For now I'd get the power supply exchanged out with the correct one. If you still have problems it's possible the main logic bd has issues. Then you could try to isolate it down or swap the bd out.

For hardware diags you can start with Apples: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509?viewl...

Later on you can dip into some of these: http://www.pure-mac.com/diag.html

Thank You Dan I will replace it as soon as possible, and tanks for the links i ran the diagnostics and no problem its been found. =(

Any news on getting the power supply exchanged out? The fact diags didn't see anything puts more strength on the power supply being bad and/or not able to supply enough power when needed.

さんによる

Hello Dan

I Havent been able to replace it, because i wasn't sure if that was the problem, i look online for the power supply by the part number and said is the power supply for this Imac. You think replacing it will correct the problem ? I'll get a new part and ill let you know if the problem is fix, thank you for your help, if you think of anything else that could be wrong or i need to do please let me know, thanks

If Apples Diagnostics didn't find a problem then you need to focus on the power supply. Diags doesn't test for power drops.
