Whirlpool wrf535swhz01 ice maker not working?

Whirlpool ice maker randomly stopped working. Even when arm is in “on” position, no water fills the tray. Water is still coming through the door (water dispenser) but I replaced the filter anyway, did not solve issue as of yet. Reached around in ice tray and can feel frozen ice in the tray, but cannot hear motor or ice tray filling with water. Not sure if it’s stuck or how to fix, need advice troubleshooting! Thanks in advance!

Hi @tp2

Here’s the refrigerator’s tech sheet which may help.

Looking at the tech sheet, for water to flow into the ice maker the ice maker water inlet solenoid has to be operated. This is done by the ice maker. There are two inlet valves, one for the water dispenser and one for the ice maker. If the inlet valve is faulty the part number is WPW10420083 (supplier example only). Search online using the part number only to find suppliers that suit you best.

The power for the ice maker comes through the freezer door switch. The ice maker won’t work if the door is open or if the door switch is faulty.

There is also an inline fuse with the ice maker that may have to be checked.

Lastly it may just be a faulty ice maker.

Hopefully a start.

The door switch I had was broken at the same time my ice maker switch was dislodged from the slot. The switch being broken was 100% what the problem was.

I took the entire Freezer door out and pulled the ice maker unit and checked all terminals for corrosion etc. could not figure this out until I read your post about the power going through the switch.

Saved me hundreds of dollars and weeks of waiting for parts.

Thank you Jayeff!! Appreciate your post

when you say freezer door - is that the same as the light switch??

@sh3says

Yes.

Here's an image of the door switch in the model referred to in the question at the top of this page. There's a video in the link that shows how to replace it.

In a lot of refrigerators which also have an icemaker the freezer "door" switch has two functions: a) it turns the freezer light on/off when the door is opened/closed and b) allows the icemaker to work i.e. fill, dispense etc when the freezer door is closed but not when it is open.

If the door switch contacts for the ice maker circuit are faulty it won't work but it could be that the door switch contacts for the light are still working OK. These contacts are in the same switch

It is a simple change over switch see "double throw" switch representation in the first image. The link was the first one I found that showed the schematic (drawing) equivalent of a change over switch. It wasn't linked to imply anything

An example is C= power in, A = to ice maker B = to light.

When door is open C switches over to connect to B and light turns on and the ice maker is disconnected from the power. When the door is closed C switches back to A and the ice maker works but now the light is turned off.

@tp2 I found the owner’s manual for your refrigerator. On page 18 there are instructions for troubleshooting the water and ice maker. Hopefully this gets you started until someone with a little more knowledge of this model comes along to help you out.
