Mac Pro 2019 SSDs do not work in the iMac Pro 2017

I have an iMac Pro here with a defective SSD. Apple is selling Mac Pro 2019 SSDs on their website, and they look identical to the ones in the iMac Pro. I also found an eBay seller listing the Mac Pro 2019 SSD as compatible with the iMac Pro. So based on those two very reliable sources, I tried installing a 2TB set in the iMac Pro.

The Mac is completely unresponsive. It can be found in DFU mode, but when I try to restore it using Apple Configurator I get the error:

Gave up waiting for device to transition from RestoreOS state to BootedOS State. [com.apple.MobileDevice.MobileRestore – 0xFA5 (4005)]

So this post is just to inform people who might get the same idea.

Edit: it turns out they most likely ARE compatible, and that if you have this error, you simply need to swap the left and right SSD.

It worked for me with Apple’s 8TB Mac Pro Upgrade Kit. It worked fine but I had to choose restore, not revive in the Apple Configurator and it eventually booted to a folder with a flashing question mark, it did take awhile so be patient. Then I just booted with Command + R and installed a fresh install of Big Sur. Now I have a iMac pro with 8TB’s of internal storage! It’s a bit old but still worthwhile! Plus it’s using an Apple part so I feel good about that.

Yes exactly, I learned a few more things since making the post above. The real clue is: the 2 SSDs can't be swapped. They have a left and right side, and if you install them the other way around they won't work. That isn't obvious as neither the iMac Pro logic board nor the iMac Pro SSDs have an indicator for which SSD goes where.

But I installed the 4TB Apple Mac Pro SSDs, and the iMac didn't work. Restore / revive from DFU / recovery, same error each time. I installed the original SSDs again and same thing! So I was thinking I must've broken something. Then I swapped the original SSDs, and it worked again. By this time I had already returned the Mac Pro SSDs to Apple and ordered iMac Pro SSDs on eBay. I installed the new iMac Pro SSDs, same issue. Swapped them around, now working fine.

My imac pro fails to go to the disk utility page after cmd+R or cmd+shift+R. I thought this is just the SSD issue. Apple genius bar said its logic board+SSD and asked for $2300 for fixing it.

I want to make a bet to replace the SSD by myself without changing the logic board.

I got a stupid question - how to determine the SSD is faulty but not the logic board?

@Patrick Chiang Well installing to an external SSD (or hard drive, but it will be slow) might help. But it's still possible a completely defective internal SSD will block that from working, as the system might hang trying to communicate with it. If I were you I would order the Mac Pro SSDs from Apple, replace them and see if the issue is fixed. If not, return them in the return window for a refund.

Yep, I did the same thing with swapping them around. When I had the logic board out with the ssd side facing me I put number one on the right and number two on the left and that worked. I got that info from a seller of a 4tb kit on Ebay and it worked on the 8TB kit.

iMac Pro SSDs don't work in Mac Pro, but Mac Pro SSDs work in either.
