My PSP Model 2004's got no image but audio is working.

This has been the problem for a long time and I've delayed fixing it for 2 years now. So it's probably the backlight does this mean I have to change the screen, or change the MOBO?

Hello, if anyone is still active, I would like to know if any of you had a problem, where the backlight works and when you move analog stick, you can hear it is moving through the menu, but there is no image. I have tried to change the screen, that I know it works, but still no luck.

Thank you.

Hi @vpkami ,

With the device turned on try shining a torch at an angle close to the screen and see if you can detect any images at all.

They will be very faint if they are there so trying this in a darkened room may help.

If you can see images then as you say there is a backlight problem.

Check if the backlight fuse is OK.

Here’s the Ifixit PSP 2000 guide that may help with opening the device etc.

If you can’t see any images then as a DIY repair it may be cheaper to replace the LCD screen first and see if that resolves the problem rather than first replacing the motherboard. Just search for PSP 2004 LCD screen to get results for suppliers that suit you best.

I'm new to fixing stuff so how should I fix the fuse? Can y'all help me?

@vpkami

First you need to check IF the fuse is the problem, by opening the device and testing the fuse for continuity using an Ohmmeter.

If the fuse tests OK then there may be a problem with the LCD screen or the motherboard - see answer above regarding this.

If the fuse tests open circuit then it will have to be replaced as it cannot be repaired

According to the link it is a 0.5A fuse (board designation F4101) and it will be a smd type (surface mounted device) so you will need soldering tools and skills to replace it.

I don't know what physical size it is so it may be what is known as a 0803 or perhaps the smaller 0602 size. Theses are the physical dimensions of the fuse so that it fits the solder pads on the motherboard.

Maybe search online for 0.5A 0803 smd fuse (example only) to find suppliers of the part.

The dimensions are shown in the example. Check if it matches the distance between the solder pads on the board i.e. ~4mm in case this is not the physical size you need

Um I just added a pic to ask if everything looks good? Because in another video I had seen his psp had a different metal shield over the processor but mine is different is it correct? I've put the image of the other guy's psp and the shield is different this is what I meant by is mine fine?

@vpkami

I don't know.

According to the link I posted in my answer you have to remove the motherboard from the case and turn it over as the fuse is mounted on the underside.

The board shown in the link hasn't got a metal cover over the processor at all although I suppose it could have already been removed.

Looking online shows that most PSP models have a backlight fuse so it is the obvious thing to check first if there is an image seen when using a torch to light up the pixels in the LCD screen. The pixels are normally lit by the backlights in the screen, but of course if they have no power (blown fuse) then the backlights can't work.

@vpkami

On the 2nd image you posted I can see two fuses marked but there may be more.

You need to find any components designated with a F and use an Ohmmeter to measure them, to make sure that they're OK and not open circuit. A normal test for a fuse is a short circuit i.e. 0Ω (i.e. zero Ohms). An Ohmmeter measures resistance in Ohms and is one of the meter functions which is found in a DMM (digital multimeter)

If you don't have one then you'll need to get one and learn how to use it if you want to repair the device.
