Weird, burning smell coming out of iMac. Electric noises. Still boots.

Hello. Just now a bad smell was coming out of my 2015 iMac. I turned it off, waited, turned it back on. Heard an electric sound, something like zzzzzz, then it shut off. Still with the smell. After a few hours, turned it back on again, it actually booted to macos, but still with the smell. Any ideas? My guess right now is that it’s some dust buildup that’s burning, however shouldn’t it be totally burned off by now?

I’m thinking it could be the psu short circuiting, but to where? If it’s to the case, I would have noticed something when I touched it, or it would have triggered ground fault protection. Or if its to something else in the computer, how is it still turning on?

The high pitch buzzing sound is a transformer vibrating. And given the fact you smell a burn’t odor I’m thinking power supply.

Make sure you get the special cutter tool and credit cards and study the guide fully as the way you lift the display can effect it still working in the end.

When removing it be very careful as the caps are still holding a charge! I would wear gloves and only touch the edges of the PS logic board and put it into an anti-static bag so its safe on your bench (and out of reach of kids)

Hello, sorry for bothering you, this time I’m sure it’s not the power supply transformers. Just now I heard some more buzzing sounds, and saw some sparks coming out of the back vent hole, and then immediately a burning smell. Quickly turned it off.
