My screen is so faint I can only see it in a darkened room.
Screen not broken and everything still works but screen so dark I can only read in darkened room. Have updated driver etc but no luck

First thing that comes to mind is a backlight failure. If this isn’t the case I would think it could be a display connector issue. Chances are that if it isn’t an OLED or in a OLED family it is a backlight failure.

Thank you for your answer. Do I have to replace the whole screen or can I just replace the backlight? I'm not sure what to do as it is quite old and the screens seem expensive.
I don't know where you would find parts you can trust for this machine. I would just replace the screen completely. IFixIt has a screen for $180. I don't really know what would be the best way to resolve this, this is as I can't find any information on the screen other than microsofts special names for their parts.
I would also add that it might be the display connector. Have you opened the machine up and checked any connections?
