FileVault won’t allow cloning HD to new SSD

I am attempting to replace my hard drive with an SSD. I can’t  turn off FileVault, (it is greyed out after decryption) and within a few seconds the HD starts an hours long  encryption again. I have been able to unlock the disk, but it locks automatically again when encryption restarts. I can not clone the encrypted hard drive. Does anybody have a remedy for this?

Did you get your system hacked? Someone has a background script running on you.

Frankly, I don’t recommend cloning as often it fails to bring everything over. Instead I would get an external drive to set it up as a TimeMachine backup drive. Then you can backup your drive as the TimeMachine won’t be encrypted then you can restore it to your SSD after you’ve put it in your system.

So lets walk through the process:

  • Run a good antivirus/malware on your drive
  • Backup your stuff
  • Install the new drive and install a fresh macOS from Apples Servers or via a bootable OS installer drive. I do recommend sticking with Sierra or jump to Mojave (Catalina has issues and Big Sur is not supported on your system).
  • I would run the antivirus/malware on your TimeMachine drive to be doubly sure nothing was missed.
  • Restore your apps and data from the TimeMachine.
