Why do I not have Service?
I have updated to ios5 and i have also done repairs on this phone. It barley picks up a signal and is almost always out of service, also the wifi signal is very weak.
Weak Wi-Fi is fixed by carefully connecting Flex Cable #6 to the Logic Board. The 'No Service' can sometimes be fixed by making sure that the copper metal progs near the area of the 'Do not remove' sticker, are firmly against the metal bezel of the iPhone. Before opening and during any repair of the iPhone 3GS make sure it is OFF, or you risk damaging your iPhone.

replaced power button, headphone jack, screen/digitzer and lcd over a 4 month period.

And you cleaned all metal connectors as you went? This is one of the reasons for loss of reception. Wifi issue may be due to misplacement of the long screw at top of logicboard. Check the guides on here as they all carry cautions and advice regarding these 2 issues.. Hope this helps a little.
