How does one remove a processor to install a lower powered processor?

Is it possible to remove a processor from a logic board and install a lower-powered processor?

My logic board, a 2.8ghz CTO, failed, and I took it in for repairs. When i picked it up, system profiler indicated it was running at 2.66ghz. I suspect the repairer installed a downgraded logic board, but they claim they actually "repair" the logic board, rather than "replace" it. (Here's there word's exactly: "We operate our own logic board repair facility. We identify the specific components on your logic board that were damaged, and we replace those components.").

Is there an explanation for the down-grade beyond them simply installing a downgraded logic board and not owning up? Or is it possible to replace the processor on a logic board without mucking the whole thing up (which means they installed a weaker processor in my case).

Thanks

If you still have the original machine serial number compare it with the actual serial number then you'll know if the logic board has been swapped.

Thanks. Its the same serial number.

They did not repair your board they replaced it. They (and I) have the Apple software to reinstall a serial number. Apple would have replaced the logic board for $280 plus shipping. I'm wondering how much they stuck you for?

Apple wanted 310 plus shipping, until they claimed user-caused damage. So they wanted $1200. This place charged $300. Now that you mention it though, there were two serial number stickers in the battery housing, both identical.

What are the last three figures of your serial number? Are these stickers above the RAM slot or on the battery?

They have the computer right now. The sticker I'm talking about is the one you see when you flip over the MBP and pop out the battery, and look inside the casing. It matches my original serial, but there were two of them (stickers).

Go here, enter your number and let us know what it says: https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWar...

It says that I'm registered and that "Repairs and Service Coverage: Repair Warranty. Your product is covered for hardware repairs and service under the repair warranty."

But my computer is out of warranty as its over three years old (and i don't have applecare). I also have a receipt from the apple store dated October 23 (i took it too the apple store first), similarly saying its out of warranty.

They replaced the logic board. On every apple laptop board I have seen the CPU is on the board VIA a ball grid array. I have never had any reason to remove one and re-ball it except for physical or liquid damage to the logic board. I would go back and raise &*^&. What was the problem you were having with the laptop originally?

The logic board failed. Won't power-on past POST. Get a black screen, no startup chime, fans turn on and sleep light is solid, but then it turns off.

I've taken it back and they've promised to order a new 2.8ghz logic board from Apple and put it in.

But they claimed that they don't generally just switch out the boards and that they're able to separate the processor from the board and install on other boards. I suspect they just gave me the wrong board and didn't want to own up, so am wondering if what they say they're doing is even feasible.
