Why my fridge not cooling Old type fridge without evaporator fan
Hi there,
I have old type fridge with no evaporator fan.Has freezer on bottom and fridge compartment on top.The evaporator coils are on top of freezer compartment. The one leaving evaporator runs up to coils in fridge compartment which is behind fridge wall. The freezer works but the fridge does not get cold at all.I pulled foam at back off fridge to see coils behind fridge wall.If i touch coils they are not cold at all.It is a closed circuit so how come evaporator in freezer is cold but coils inside fridge are warm. The gas has to pass through fridge coils to return to compressor so should get cold
Hi @jdc12 ,
What is the make and model number of the refrigerator?
Just verifying that you're not confusing the condenser coils with the evaporator coils, although usually the condenser coils are on the outside of the cabinet?

Is Defy fridge.Model i'm not sure as there is no labels on fridge.I was given fridge a week ago and was trying to see if i could fix it.The condenser coils are on outside.Goes through capillary tube into evaporator in freezer. The freezer is working. On out let to evaporator it carries on up to coils in fridge compartment then once through those coils goes back to compressor.

What is the temperature like in the freezer compartment?
Don't know the model but if there are coils in the lining to cool the refrigerator compartment then “maybe” there is a refrigerant valve somewhere that shuts of that section and only allows the refrigerant to go to the evap unit in the freezer compartment.
Maybe the temperature control for the refrigerator opens and closes it
As I said i don’t know but if the upper coils were in series with the lower evap unit and there was a blockage it shouldn’t be cold either.

It has just the manual thermostat in fridge so dont think it can close off refrigerant.I have had other fridges i worked on that once fridge is on you can feel behind wall it is getting cold within a couple minutes.I just hate not knowing with simple thing like this.I am no professional it has been more of a hobby for last few years.

You may have to follow the pipes and see where they go to. There must be some reason why is is not getting cold there if the flow is from compressor > condenser > lower evap unit > upper evap unit and back to the compressor again as even a blockage would affect the flow to the lower evap unit and how cold it gets.
Wonder if it is a lack of refrigerant perhaps??
