Dropped in water - now locks and goes to sleep automatically

Hi!

A friend's iphone had water damage. It was cleaned by a professional but there are still issues.

Screen works ok, iTunes recognized it and restores it, all is almost ok, BUT on 4.1 there was this "Temperature" warning all the time.

It was updated to 5.0 but now when I am trying to set it up, out of the blue, the lock screen appears and when I slide to unlock the dial pad appears and I can only dial an emergency call. After some "slide to unlock" efforts the set up continues only to stop some seconds later when the lock screen appears again automatically.

When connected to iTunes it goes into sleep mode a few seconds later and iTunes stops "seeing" the device.

Which IC do you believe is fried?

UPDATE:

I decided to look further into the soldered shields. As it seems the "professional" cleaning by a repair company hadn't been so professional. Two resistors were broken off their positions. I feel that this is causing the issue. Is it possible that an ultrasonic bath not suitable for electronics (i.e. without sweep option) could cause a small resistor to pop off?

um... the temperature thing is I think controlled by the battery (it is on other generations) Have you actually replaced the battery permanently? you don't mention it above, but you can have stupid problems like you mention if it is "shot".. I would start there, restore, and then see what happens. Need to find the schematics.. the functions you mention are likely on power ic and yes you do get partly failed ic if say one pin/connection whatever is corroded/shorted.. Cleaning once or even twice isn't always enough. Try a soak in iso or ultrasonic cleaning (some people swear by them..I just use the old scrubbing)have you scrubbed the ic's???

I didn't replace the battery permanently. When I saw the same behavior with a new battery, I just replaced it with the original. I soaked the logic board for 2 hours and then cleaned the ICs and the connectors one by one. Do you believe that doing that again could resolve the issue?

did you clean your dock connector too? I've had to clean and clean and clean. Sometimes you win and sometimes you don't but it can never get too many cleans..

It seems that two resistors were broken off their position. The "professional" that cleaned the board probably used an ultrasonic bath. Is it possible that an ultrasonic bath not suitable for electronics (i.e. without sweep option) could cause a small resistor to pop off?

Looking at the number of people who've knocked them off just opening their phone I'd say it would be very possible.

Personally I do not think that this is caused by a bad IC, they either work or are ruined. It is possible that you have a bad solder connections etc. You might have to take another look at the professionally cleaned logic board. If someone cleaned it professional, why would they leave it with errors like you have. I would follow this guide Electronics Water Damage, replace the battery and reevaluate from there.

UPDATE

You can also check the schematic and check the test points. Download it from here

Thank you for the answer. Let me mention a few things though:

The phone was received cleaned. I cleaned it again with isopropyl alcohol. I put the logic board into a good casing (I also tried 3 different batteries). It still does the same thing. I do not really understand the phrase "Personally I do not think that this is caused by a bad IC, they either work or are ruined". A bad IC can either be one not functioning properly or one that is fried, i.e. not working at all. This may lead to a total loss of the board (dead phone) or to a board that does not function properly (malfunctioning phone). For example if the backlight IC shorts and doesn't work, the phone works just fine, but you do not have backlight. I can't understand what your point is. Also you mention "If someone cleaned it professional, why would they leave it with errors like you have". No matter how fast or good the cleaning is after a water damage, there are cases where a short happens instantly, hence there are problems from this point on.

I sounds to me like I offended you. That was never my intention. Yes,you are right. What I was getting at is that the IC is either working, or not working, just like you said about the backlight. Either the backlight works, or it does not. If you have a partial function, most of the time it is a connection error, not the actual IC. What made me say that is the last thing you mentioned. "iTunes it goes into sleep mode a few seconds later and iTunes stops "seeing" the device." This does not sound like an IC error. However, do check on the Power Management IC and see if you can identify anything that shortens it out. That would be the only IC that I would think, that could be giving you trouble. I attached an image for the IC and the iPhone 4 schematic to my original answer. This way you can check the traces and see what you find. Again, I did not mean to offend you or anyone else. Good Luck.

hey OT3...I don't think you are offending, you have experience and knowledge and that is what you are trying to portray. My answer is the same but different? you say solder, I say pins (bit potato, tomato?)Any how I think the schematics will identify what is problem.

Thanks, pollytintop. Just want to make sure that Theo gets his phone fixed. As you know, the damage the immersion causes later, is usually brought on by corrosion on the board. I'd feel bad to tell someone to reflow the board or replace IC's since they are usually the last things to go. I think the PM IC is even partially glued which makes it a bigger PITA.

さんによる

Of course you did not insult me! Not at all! I just didn't understand what your point was. The schematics is really helpful and I will check the board again. I googled the symptoms and I didn't find a someone's iphone with a similar behavior. It is weird since as soon as it gets into sleep mode it also gets disconnected from the PC, and when I try to set it up over wi-fi it just goes to sleep and set up starts from the beginning. Thanks a lot for the info! I will try to clean it again.

Hope I'm not making myself look stupid and unprofessional.

If the iPhone is still under the apple warranty, change the water damage sensing paper and take it into Apple Care. Hopefully they will replace your iphone with a completely new one.

We had a debate about these stickers... Most here agree its cheating and not in the ethos of the site which is empowering people to "repair" their own device.

Polly, it's actually legally fraud and criminal. The Bobbies can throw you in the Tower for it ;-)

さんによる

I never done it guvnor! It ain't right see? ;-)

さんによる

You guys are correct. Despite my reply as such outrageous, I haven't actually done it before. I'm a little too chicken to do it. Anyway, I have completely overhauled my ip4 just by following the guides. It was easy peasy until I got to the details of the instruction. I blitz through it without installing the screws before checking on the lengths and there goes the display. Anyway, it wasn't so bad since the display I ordered from china was only $50USD including shipping. Also, the aluminum frame which was the whole reason for the overhaul only cost $35USD including shipping.
