Sudden sleep or shutdowns post iFixit battery install MBP 15" mid-2012

Hello everyone,

I recently purchased an iFixit battery to replace a not so good NuPower one.

Post install I was having issues with the battery shutting down my computer at random when running only on battery. It would be at 80%, 30% etc. It did it on both OS installs I have (partitioned disk). Never had this happen on the Nupower or original Apple battery.

iFixit sent me instructions on CoconutBattery, reset SMC, reset NVRAM, etc. They checked everything over and sent me a replacement.

Installed replacement, did the calibration, did the reset SMC, and now the laptop has begun to do so a sudden sleep or shutdown WHILE PLUGGED IN!!!

Also noticed that it seems that the laptop is getting hotter than usual at times.

I’ve attached two sets of screen shots. The first set is from a couple of days ago right after a shut down and the second set is from today right after another shut down.

Interesting about the battery being OVER 100% health and overcharged???

Thanks for any help!

-Doug

Also let me know if I should just contact the iFixit support about this.

I don't seen any issues with your battery here. I suspect you didn’t clear and reset the min/max values within SMC so the old batteries values are still being used.

How about disconnecting your battery, with nothing plugged in press the power button a good 15 secs to fully discharge the logic board, then plug the battery back in and run the battery down and recharge it for a good 8hrs.

You may also want to run the onboard diagnostics. Restart your system and press the D key to enter

So I need to calibrate the battery again after doing it the first time?

I did the D key, and it said it could not find a file and just stayed like that.

@summertemp - Basically yes!

Sorry Apple still hasn't fixed the firmware to fix diagnostics.

HI Dan,

Thanks for helping me with this.

Something is wrong with apple's firmware and diagnostics?

I have had the battery unplugged now for about 30 minutes, battery is 64%

So, I did hold the power button for about 25/30 seconds (just to be sure).

Aaaaaand...... battery at 60%, and BOOM, shut down on me.

Attached is the latest screen shot.

@summertemp - To quick! Again you need to properly calibrate the battery!

Hi Dan,

So my laptop is plugged in and charging, and BOOM! here I am again writing after it did a sudden restart.

Calibrated battery or not, it shouldn't restart while plugged into the wall.

It has never done this until I installed the iFixit batteries. I have had original Apple and two NuPower batteries in this machine and never had this problem.
