Whole Keyboard stopped working

Hey! About a two weeks ago I spilled some soda on my Macbook Pro 2015 13”. It really were just a few drops on the top-left side of the keyboard so I don’t think it harmed anything really. (What do you think? The problems started to arise about 1 1/2 weeks after the accident?)

Anyways, a few days ago I saw that my keyboard suddenly stopped working. When it happened, I started randomly typing on it and after about three seconds it worked again for a few minutes. (The WHOLE keyboard stopped working, power button was completely fine though) This happened for a couple of days on and off. Eventually it stopped working completely.

So I opened my machine up to see wether there was any water damage visible. Took the motherboard out, lifted up the “background lights tab”, but nothing. I didn’t see any water stains whatsoever. So I built everything back together (I think I saw that the keyboard cable was a bitt loose when I opened it up, so I put it back in correctly) and it did work again… for one day. The problem arised again, but only very rarely (once every couple hours for a few keystrokes)

So… I did some research. Apperently the power button is a seperate port on the connector, which explains why it worked.

So I am now searching for the broken part and I am not even sure anymore if my soda accident had anything to do with it (It was 1 1/2 weeks ago, the computer was everyday in use and only after that the problems arised. Besides, the WHOLE keyboard stopped working not just individual rows)

I narrowed it down to a broken touchpad-to-mainboard connector or the USB Controller. Floating Ground maybe? Or even missing PP3V3 or PP3V42? Power button still works, and is low active after all, but maybe isn’t as sensitive. Measuring anything isn’t going to work because the problem happens so rarely.

Thank you guys so so much!

Well the battery looks OK from CoconutBattery. At this point you’ll need to open things up to see if the battery has become swollen. If it has you’ll need a new battery.

Update (01/22/2021)

@Lukas - If it was the internal USB controller (hub) then your trackpad would also not be working.

It's starting to sound more likely you have killed the keyboard its self with your soda spill. Time to replace the keyboard!

This gets tricky! You’ll need to follow this guide to either replace the full uppercase (easy & quick, but more expensive!) or go deeper replacing the keyboard alone (harder & lengthy, but cheaper) MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Early 2015 の上部ケースの交換

I already opened it up. Battery OK. I suspect a broken connection somewhere, although... the whole keyboard doesn't work... maybe the USB Controller even?

I'll just keep an eye on it for now. When it happens again I'll open it up and measure the vias on the mainboard. I really want to rule everything out before I change the keyboard. After all, it really were just a few dropplets but then again... It looks like a duck, it sounds like a duck, it probably is a duck. Thank you though!

However I have one last question ;) could it be the flex-cable to the trackpad circuitry? The power button works, but the rest doesn't... and the power button is the only one not going to the trackpad

@Lukas - Possible corrosion on the logic board connector? You'll need to inspect it.
