Can Automotive Computers be repaired

Computers used in cars and trucks are a common fault and repair item. The costs are high and I can’t get any details on what happens to the old units.

Some vehicles have more than one to control everything from powertrains to electric window and audio consoles.

Can these be repaired?

I know this doesn't completely answer your question but one first try to fix is disconnect the battery to force a cold boot. This has helped me a number of times in the past.

Thanks Mike, Definitely a good tip before removing the ECM or other "Computer Modules". I was looking for experience on actually troubleshooting and repairing the "replaced" units.

Lot's of google results for places that refurbish them, but so far, none on how to do it.

Must be a sacred trade secret?

Hi,

Just an idea that you may like to follow up.

This website has a really good selection of car service manuals from the manufacturer. Mostly USA makes and models but some are transferable to a degree, to other regions

Have noticed in the past that some of the manuals have in their electrical wiring sections or even electronic control modules sections etc (it depends how the manual is laid out) how to check the diagnostics of some modules in the vehicle.

This is not to say that they have the schematics of the modules, merely that they tell you what to expect on the outputs of the module when certain functions have been selected

Be aware that not all the manuals have this, it’s only that I’ve come across a few over the years when looking for other wiring problems.

I don’t think that the manufacturers will ever release the programming for the module as they’ve spent too much on it

As an example click on the link above and select Chrysler as the make and Chrysler 300/300C as the model click on the Read Manual for the 2011-2019 service repair manual + owner’s manual and then pass the security check and scroll down and select Electronic Control Modules in the list of the various sections of the manual.

You can make it full screen for easier reading or even download to print it at this point

You may have to accept (enable?) cookies and pass some security checks along the way, that’s why I can’t link it directly.

This was definitely a foot in the right direction... I'm wondering how much troubleshooting can be done w/o the aid of schematics and logic diagrams.

There was a time one could start from the power supply and work all the way through a device just based on common electronic principles, many I learned in the service.

But it seems lately the manufacturers are doing their level best to keep us out of the insides and certainly making the old school a nearly impossible journey through the circuits and modules.

You provided a very good path to finding some of the keys to the treasure box.

Thanks,

Dave

@David Brawner

Not only are they not providing any information re schematics etc a lot of times you don't even know what the component is especially with ICs as there are no markings on them or they have been deliberately obliterated.

I believe it's all about maximizing profit by keeping it all to themselves and forcing you to come to them for replacements

I don't think that they even repair them they simply replace as it costs too much to have skilled technicians to fix things at component level its cheaper to have "board jockeys" (or should I say "bored" jockeys) who simply replace when the flow chart tells them to do so.

You can guess that I too, am also old school ;-)

Cheers
