Fried power supply? Possible outlet surge

Hi Everyone, new to the iFixit forums but im seeking some assistance and thought, where else would i go?…

Model: Sony XBR65x850C

Anyhow, was installing some hard wired lighting in my garage and had to turn the power off and on several times to that circuit. twice, i carelessly switched off the circuit for the outlet the TV was plugged into, regrettably without a surge protector. Hours later it appears the TV may have rec’d a surge and something fried/broke. The outlet is still functional and i tried the power button reset, etc with no luck. I have since replaced the TV with something I have wanted so its not all bad, but i woudl love to fix this tv for not a lot of money if possible.

Yesterday I pulled the back panel and found the fuse, but found it to be ceramic so visually it cannot be assessed. Checking to see if anyone has any experience in this. I dont have a multimeter to test but am willing to either order the fuse for $10 or should i just replace the whole board which i found for about $60.

Hi,

Is the TV standby power light on or off when there is power connected to the TV?

If it is off then try replacing the fuse first. If the TV was not turned on at the time there is a fair chance that only the fuse has gone and not other parts of the board. If the TV was turned on at the time then it would be another matter.

Looking online at images of the power board it has a T5A 250V fuse. Ensure that the fuse you get is a 250V 5A Slow blow axial fuse. The T indicates that it is a Timed fuse, the axial type means that it has pigtails so that it can be soldered onto the board

A normal fuse i.e. fast acting having the same rating would blow as soon as the power is connected to the TV due to the initial high inrush current whereas a slow blow fuse is designed to hold until this current has subsided. We’re talking about 10-12mS of time here.

The fuse should cost <$2.00 each from most electronics parts stores whereas online they usually don’t sell in quantities of less than 5 pieces which increases the cost. Just a thought.

If the TV standby power light is on but the TV is not turning on when using either the remote or the TV controls then it may be the power board or possibly the mainboard. Further testing would be required to determine where the problem lies

Wow thanks for the info and insight. The light is off when plugged in. None of the normal tricks worked to get it on or any light on for that matter. I will start with the fuse and if no luck will order the board. Will report back in about a week or so. Thank you again.
