Freezer heating instead of cooling

My freezer is heating instead of cooling. It gets very warm inside. Its a Frigidaire Gallery with freezer on the bottom. Any advice on what to do? Thank you.

Hi @shkurra ,

What is the model number of the freezer?

Is the compressor motor running?

Can you hear the evaporator fan inside the freezer compartment running? (doors need to be closed to hear it as fan will stop when a door (either door) is opened)

Its FGUN2642LF6.

When plugged in I hear everything running. The freezer cools until it reaches 4C (39F) and than it starts heating. The fridge stays in room temperature.

Hi @shkurra ,

When the compressor is running, open the freezer door and manually operate the door switch. You should feel icy cold air being blown out of the vents at the back of the freezer compartment by the evaporator fan. If you release the door switch the fan should stop.

If the air coming from the vents at the back of the freezer compartment is not icy cold then there is a problem with the sealed system. Either a faulty compressor, a blockage somewhere in the sealed system or a leak of refrigerant in the system.

Check for any oily residues on the condenser coils near the compressor under the compartments or under or near the compressor which may indicate a leak of refrigerant. There is a special oil added to the refrigerant to lubricate the compressor and if there is a leak then the refrigerant will escape to the air undetected but the oil will leave a trace.

Also check how hot the compressor motor is (it should be warm but not too hot to touch) or if there is ice build up on the pipes leading from the compressor indicating a blockage.

Depending on your location, you need a licensed repairer to check the sealed system due to the environmental regulations regarding the handling of refrigerant gases.

If you can’t feel any air coming from the vents at the back of the freezer compartment then there may be a problem with the evaporator fan - part #13 cabinet parts, fan blade or power to the fan.

Thank you. The compressor gets very hot and when it is hot the freezer stops cooling and starts heating. Im not whether it is worth to fix it at this point.

@shkurra

As you say it may not be worth it. depending on how old the refrigerator is (assuming more than 12 months - that's all the warranty is for the model) the compressor - part #29 Cooling system costs $801+ labour to replace.

It may not be the compressor but a leak in the sealed system therefore less gas being pumped. The refrigerant being pumped through the system by the compressor also helps to keep the compressor from getting too hot so if there isn't the correct amount it will heat up.

Unfortunately you need the equipment that a professional repairer has to test the high / low pressures in the sealed system to know exactly if it is the compressor or the system that is the problem
