MacBook Pro 2012 start up problems

I was using my Mac with a extended screen when I closed the screen and laptop went to sleep and woke up the next day and tried to use it and it wouldn’t turn on. It makes the chime noise but then shuts down again. If I do manage to have it start it goes into a login screen with a safe mode type of a login but I still can’t login. I tried erasing the hard drive by going into system recovery. It didn’t let me do it. The way I accessed system recovery was through the menu bar on the top left. I replaced the battery because someone recommended that maybe it’s a power supply issue. But no help.

Lets see what the on board diagnostics tells us. Restart your system and press the D key. Do you get any errors?

Problem is when I power it, it chimes and I hear the fan with a black screen for a while and I feel heat under the right side of the keyboard. I have to wait for a while before it starts booting. Once screen turns on first thing happens is it loads with the apple logo then goes into reset password window and the white light in front is off during this whole process.

I tried recovery assistant to erase Mac and I get a message “Couldn’t open device. : (-69877)

The error message is telling me the drive has failed!

Do you have a bootable external drive or access to a second Mac which has the the same ports which we can connect your Mac to using Target Disk Mode to boot your system off of: Use target disk mode to move files to another computer

I have an external hard drive that I used as an extra space where I backed up my files to before but not the macOS just files like pictures and I do not have a second Mac. Funny story the drive has failed on me once before (but that was different than this time) after 3-4 years when I first purchased it. Luckily I had the extended AppleCare and they fixed it 4-5 years later I guess it happened again. Back to the issue at hand, I managed yesterday to get into disk utility and ran a first aid which it successfully completed but on all volumes but when I restarted same problem still. I did not have a restore point because I tried time machine as well. What do you recommend?

I would have tried both of what you have already done. If there is any other way to get into recovery mode, try it (e.g. use Google or iFixit to find out if there are other means of doing so).

Otherwise, all I can suggest is unplugging it from the battery and power source for, let's say, an hour, and letting it sit. Then, put the battery back in, and try the process again. If it still doesn't work, try just removing the battery, (and power cable for 30 seconds) and then plugging it back in to the power source to see if the battery is causing the issue.

These may seem like longer than necessary wait times, but I do not know how long it may keep any sort of charge, and I would want to ensure that rules out the possiblity of those issues.

If the battery is charged, you could also unplug the power source (charging cable) and then try it with just the battery in.

I wish you the best of luck!
