Xbox One Repair, OSU fails at 59%

I am trying to repair a buddy's Xbox One. He replaced the HDD but cannot get the system to do an OSU update. It gets to 59% and fails. Is there anyway to by pass this? Or is the HDD he got from another Xbox One system bad? The error was a E100. Thanks.
