Hello, whenever I try booting in the fan spins for a few seconds and then it stops. There is no input on the LCD. So I tried it with an external monitor. Still no luck.

Abel Benoie this “booting in the fan spins for a few seconds and then it stops “ is normal behaviour from the fan. It does it because your computer does not boot or post. This could be related to pretty much anything from bad RAM, bad HDD to a bad processor.

I have checked the HDD with another computer and I can confirm that the HDD is not the issue. I would like to purchase some new RAM but I'm not sure where to get DDR2 RAM. And anything more than 40 bucks would be too much money on a laptop this old.
Thank you! Turns out it was bad RAM, I managed to salvage a 4GB stick of RAM from another computer. It works now!

Hi,
Try a full power refresh in case the BIOS has become corrupted and is preventing a normal start i.e the laptop is not passing POST (Power On Self Test)
Here’s the procedure:
a). Disconnect the charger if connected.
b). Remove the main battery from the laptop.
c). Disassemble the laptop and remove the coin cell RTC battery from the motherboard. Here’s the service manual for the laptop. Click on Contents > Coin cell battery to view the necessary pre-requisite steps and then the procedure to remove the battery. Note the orientation of the battery for when you have to re-insert it. It is +ve on top - marked on battery. When the battery is removed from the laptop, use a DMM (voltmeter function) to measure the battery’s voltage. If it is <2.6V DC replace it. Usually the battery is a CR2032 Lithium coin cell battery that is available most everywhere. Check the battery type, printed on the battery itself, to verify the type number in case it is different.
d). Press and hold the laptop’s Power on button for 30 seconds and then release. This will restore the BIOS back to the factory default settings.
e). Reinsert the coin cell battery (or replacement battery) - remember the orientation!
f). Reassemble the laptop, reinsert the main battery and connect the charger.
g). Switch on the laptop and check if it starts OK. There may be a message on the screen about the date and time being incorrect. This is normal as the BIOS has been reset. Once the date and time have been corrected, the message won’t appear the next time that the laptop is started.

Then just reinsert the battery after pressing the laptop Power on button for 30 seconds as described above. The idea is to drain all the power from the motherboard to remove any corrupted settings that may be being held by the battery even though it is low perhaps. The battery check was only in case it was low and this can allow the corruption to occur.
If the problem was a corrupted BIOS then the laptop will start OK but you may have the same problem again very soon.
If you do then you know that replacing the coin cell battery on the motherboard may stop this from happening.
Also if you're getting into repairing computers etc, then I suggest that you invest in a DMM and learn how to use it if you don't already know. Even the cheapest ones that are available from major hardware stores are useful. e.g. you can measure the voltage outputs of chargers, test battery voltages, use the DMM's Ohmmeter function to make sure that the DC-In jack in a laptop is OK etc etc. Just simple checks I know but they save a lot of time when trying to find problems

I had the same issue. At first I thought RAM then SSD. Turns out replacing the battery fixed the issue. smh

This happens to me often, what I do is remove the SSD then boot up. If it boots I put the SSD back in and it works if not, I do the same with the RAM.
