Disk utilities won't allow me to format hard drive, next step?

Got this A1150 macbook pro with hard drive wiped and then written over with 0's (for security reasons?). Trying to prepare it for re-install of os but when I try to partition disk utilities tells me that this is the start up volume and can't be erased. It also shows 2 partitions Macintosh H, and Macintosh H2. Verify disk reports failure due to not enough allocation blocks. Will not give the option to repair disk or repartition Mac' H but will let me divide H2 again. I would like to return it to a single partition, extended (journaled) with GUID formatting and re-install os x 10.4.6. Will this be possible with this hard drive or will I be better off just starting over with a new hard drive?

It sounds like you are trying to run Disk Utilities from the hard drive itself. Boot up from your system installation disk, "C" key with the disk inserted. Go to the second screen pull down menu to Utilities > Disk utility. Now you should be able to select your drive in the left hand column and format and partition it.

To determine the oldest system you can install, I need to know your exact machine. Please give the last three figures of your serial number. The earliest MBP A1150 required 10.4.5 or higher. I don't know about the restore disks from iFixit nor am I happy with them selling them.

Apple MacBook Pro "Core Duo" 1.83 15" Specs

Identifiers: MacBook Pro - MA463LL/A* - MacBookPro1,1 - A1150 - N/A

The oldest system your machine will take is 10.4.5

Call Apple up, give them your serial number and ask them to send you the original software installation disks, they usually charge $15 for them.

Thank you Mayer!!! You have been a GREAT help!! Being new to mac's it is good to find someone as knowledgeable and willing to help. Thanks again, and I will try to post on the results as soon as I am able, allowing time for shipping and such.

When trying to boot from the installation disk I get the message that I can't install Mac OS x on this computer, this is after the language choice screen. I've been told that it is because my version (X 10.4.1) is too early for the intel macbook pro and that I need 10.4.6 or later. I have ordered the restore dvd's from ifixit that are for the A1150 pro and just waiting delivery. Is this version stuff causing my problem with my hard drive cooperating? I have also tried a new hdd (wd160 gb) but just get a file folder with a ? in the flashing at me. Tiger (10.4.1) will install and boot from the new drive when formatted in the apple scheme but not when formatted in the GUID scheme (when using an ibook g4 and fire wire remote install) it says that mac osx cannot boot from it. I'm hoping all this is because of the ppc/intel compatibility and sooner or later I can get my pro back without having to take it to an apple repair shop.

Last three of serial are VJ2. So is the problem compatibility of the intel machine?
