SSD Blade & 2.5" SSD Upgrade Question

I’m considering upgrading my iMac 19,1

It comes with an APPLE SSD SM0512L

I’m wanting to change that out with something along the lines of the Aura Pro by OWC.

What I’m curious to know is if there is room inside to install a 2.5” SSD drive?

Do I just need a Bracket & Cable ? If So what are the part numbers

Or

Is adding a 2.5” drive not possible because the Logic/Main board is different?

My thought process is to max out the Blade SSD and add something in that open bay if possible, I have several 2.5” drives that would work just fine.

Thanks

Also does anyone know of an external case to use with the removed APPLE SSD SM0512L? If you look on Amazon you get “The Phone Book” of answers with no one stating 100% it will work.

Thanks Very Much S

The OWC Case: OWC Envoy Pro Portable, Bus-Powered USB 3.0 Storage Enclosure does not list support for the Apple 2019 SSD's. I don't see anything that explains this other than lack of testing ??

I would give OWC a call if you really want to salvage it. Your other option is selling it to recover some value out of it.

I have sorta wondered if it was the lack of testing, ( Along the same lines as Apple states the 19,1 RAM limit is 64GB but OWC has tested and sells 128GB ).

I saw this and am wondering if it will work:

Thanks again for all your help.

@Stewart Fleming - Sadly no.

Its' designed for the 2280 M.2 NVMe SSD's not the custom Apple units.

@Stewart Fleming - Well the good news you have two drive ports! A 3.5” SATA drive port and a PCIe Blade SSD drive port on the back side of the logic board.

The system was sold in three different configurations SATA HDD or PCIe SSD only or the two together which is what a Fusion Drive is.

So in your case it sounds like you got a PCIe blade SSD based system. You can get the needed SATA cable to add in either a 2.5” or 3.5” HDD or 2.5” SSD.

Here’s the needed parts:

Here’s the guide to put in the SATA drive iMac Intel 27インチ Retina 5Kディスプレイ ハードディスクドライブの交換 Its the same for your 2019 system but you still need to reach around to plug in the cable as the connection is on the back side.

Your other option which I don’t think you need is swapping out your current PCIe/NVMe blade SSD with a larger one. Here’s that guide iMac Intel 27インチ Retina 5K Display Blade SSDの交換

Unless you are working on very large data sets (CAD, Animation, layered drawings, Photos, Videos) you shouldn’t need anything larger than 512GB that you have. Whats important is how you setup your drives. Here the blade SSD is setup as your boot drive (macOS) and holds your Apps. Leaving as much of the drive empty! So your OS can use it for virtual RAM, caching/paging and depending on your apps scratch space. Your second drive is your data drive holding all of your media (music/vids) and your work.

Thanks for the help, I was hoping that someone would know with a high degree of certainly that this could be done, I can't be the only person who has ever wanted to do it.

My only other hurdle is using the removed 512GB SSD as an external, any suggestions of a Case that would work ?

As I stated above if you look on Amazon you get a phone book of answers but nothing says it will work 100%

Thanks again :)

I was still working on that see above ;-}

For your question: What I am curious to know is if there is room inside to install a 2.5” SSD drive ?

Your iMac had to come with either a fusion drive or a HDD from the factory to have both the SSD blade and the 2.5” SSD drive. If it only came with an SSD, it’s not reasonably possible unfortunately to add the 2.5” SSD.

In the end I always say everything is possible, but I think it’s more than a bracket that you would need. So for 99% of folks, including the ones on iFixit, it’s not possible. I always buy iMac’s with a fusion drive and then I can add whatever I want later.

Thanks for the quick reply, All of the pictures & videos I see posted on the net, You Tube eat show a 3.5” drive installed.

I am assuming ( we all know what that can get you ) that the “space” would still be there just unused.

My I-Mac 19,1 was a BTO with just the Apple Blade SSD

If I do the SSD Blade upgrade I would like to have the part on hand if it is possible to put another drive in there.

I would think ( Assuming Again ) that the I-9 Logic boards would have the Port for the 3.5” drive for power and data cable on them by default.

Then there is always the external case thing for the removed SSD

External can work. Sounds like Dan had the right answer. I’m glad I was wrong. Hope you find the parts you need!
