One pad on charging flex damaged. Do I need to repair? (IPad mini 3)

Hi guys,

I opened up an iPad mini 3 to replace the charging port and I tried to solder off the charging port, but one of the pads came off when I did this. (as seen in the picture). I didn’t apply enough heat :(

I was wondering do I need to repair it or can I solder a new charging port connector on as normal. If do need to repair it, how do I go about it ?

Here is the boardview for this device. The missing pad is connected to an IC so ideally it should be repaired. However, it is also connected to an adjacent pad so you may not need to. It’s not a big job so I would do it just to be certain.

Thanks for your reply Minho. I agree, best to play it safe and repair it. Do you know what it would take to fix it ? (I am a newbie when it comes to soldering, however, I would like to do this myself if possible).

Basically, you have to use a very fine enameled wire, scrape away the solder mask (what covers the traces on a pcb) of a trace you need to connect to, then make a very short jumper from that spot to the missing pad. Some folks loop the wire in the pad hole. Then you cover it with a UV-curable solder mask.

It's pretty delicate work and requires good tools (fine point soldering iron tips) and a steady hand...and lots of practice.

There are plenty of videos out there so take a look to see if you are up to it. If your skills and tools aren't there yet, try soldering the charge port as is to see if it works. Test everything, especially the speakers, before sealing the device, the missing pad is the SPKR_L_CONN_P line.
