PC randomly turns into balck screen but the PC is still on

Recently, my PC has this random problem where the screen just suddenly freezes and the display went off. The PC, however, is still on and the fans are still spinning and the led lights from the case are still on. I’ll have to use the reset button every time it happens. I checked the event viewer and there is nothing there other than “Audit events have been dropped by the transport. 0”, “the system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed,or lost power unexpectedly” and “The previous system shut down was at ….. on mm/dd/yy was unexpected.” I have tried to wait for them for about 10 minutes to see if it restarts on its own and it didn’t. However, the event viewer only picks up these errors and critical after I restart the PC. Is there any way to solve this?

Hi Steven,

More details please. What is the PC's motherboard model.

Are you using onboard graphics or a video card slotted into the motherboard?

Is the monitor working? Have you tried another monitor or your TV to see if that is the problem.

@aactech Ah yes, my bad. The specs are the following

CPU: Ryzen 5 2600

GPU:Rx 570

RAM: 2x8 T-force Vulcan Z 3000 mhz

Storage: 120 gb ssd and 1 tb hard drive

Motherboard: Asus prime b450 m-a

Don't think it has anything to do with monitor since by pressing the restart button the PC restarts and the screen comes back. While the screen is black, all of the fans are still turned on normally, and the case LED is still on.

Hi @steven1990

How often is random?

Does it occur when only playing games or also when used for less "stressful" applications?

If it occurs frequently i.e. not long to wait for it to happen, try starting in safe mode with networking and see if it still happens.

If it doesn't then it is a driver problem.

If it still occurs is the latest BIOS installed on the motherboard? Also the Chipset drivers?

Just trying to eliminate things

@jayeff It's just random. I could be playing games under heavy loads for hours and it would be fine but then I could be watching youtube videos and all of a sudden the screen would freeze then it would go black. It happens like once to twice a week but it's annoying because it would be bad if it happens during zoom meetings. I tried to use DDU but it still happens after reinstalling the graphic driver.

It doesn't have to be the video driver that is causing the problem.

Safe mode only loads generic Windows drivers for all the hardware and not the specific hardware drivers. Starting in safe mode was only to eliminate if it was a driver problem or not

Seem like a RAM issue since disabling and reseating the RAM solves the issue.

Don't have another one so that part is impossible. However, during one of the black screen, I had my Bluetooth earbuds connected to the PC on and there is no sound coming from it even though I was in the middle of watching a video.
