Does dust affects pc performance instabilities?

I have 2 old pc I just took out from the store which was it's insides are full of dust. Did a minor brushing and blowing to get rid of some dust.

Problems:

1) Window xp doesn't boot after logo, monitor will show “ no signal”

2) Sometimes it boots but has weird video glitches, or stuck while loading up some programs

Tried several fix:

1) Booting Puppy Linux from USB worked constantly, however Problem#2 persists.

2) Tried puppylinux frugal install on Harddisk, crashes everytime when loading with puppylinux

3) Booting Lakka, stucked after installing.

Dear fellow repairers please advice.

Hi @kaito32 ,

What is the make and model number of the computer or the motherboard if a custom build?

If it boots OK from a USB but not from the HDD it appears to be a HDD problem.

Try getting into BIOS on startup and check that you can access all menus etc just to see what happens.

Getting the logo screen indicates that the hardware is mostly OK as the PC has passed POST (Power On Self Test) but the glitches etc is when the HDD is loading the OS and that is where the problem is. Corrupted HDD, faulty HDD etc.

Has the BIOS got a diagnostics program or perhaps the computer maker might have one online so that you can test the HDD. You could always try reseating the cable connections to the HDD at both ends in case one is loose etc. Alternatively try another HDD and install an OS on it.

Hi @jayeff,

Thanks for the fast response! I will try that and update all.

So does that mean I can rule out the possibility dust affecting the contacts due of not cleaning it well enough?

I can't recall it now. I think it one of them was American tech something the other was phoenix award. Will definitely try it later and reply.

@kaito32

Dust could have affected the connections over time so if the cables weren't removed and the cable ends and connectors at least checked or the dust cleaned off them as well it may affect things.

Reseating the cables (both ends for the data cable) effectively rubs the electrical connections, metal to metal, so that they will have a good electrical connection again if for some reason the elements e.g. humidity, over time may have created a bad electrical connection. Electrical current passing through a connection tends to keep it clean by literally burning away anything that is there which provides a resistive path rather than a non resistive path. If the resistance is too high (built up over a long time) then no current will flow and it doesn't work. This is all microscopic of course

My thinking is that if there is a problem with just one area of a computer's operation, in your case I think it is the HDD, you try to rule out all the possibilities by eliminating them and checking what happens

How do I find the diagnostic tool on the bios to check for faulty HDD?

さんによる

Hi @kaito32

Unfortunately neither motherboard has a diagnostics program in the BIOS area.

All you can do is install the HDD as a secondary drive in another working desktop Windows computer and then test it there with the disc testing tools provided by Windows e.g. chkdsk command and /or or when it is installed in another PC as a 2nd drive find out if the HDD manufacturer has a diagnostic program for the HDD model that you can download and test the HDD using it.

If you can access the HDD in the 2nd PC using Windows Explorer I suggest that if there is anything important on the HDD that you wish to save then copy it from the HDD to a USB drive etc in case the HDD totally fails

Here are the user manuals for the motherboards which may be handy for future reference
