Best upgradeable gpu for 2.8 i7?

Whats the safest upgrade for a Late 2009 iMac 27” 2.8 core i7 (I7-860)

currently my machine is running an ATI Radeon 5670 512mb and i think i can only run os high sierra at the moment

I’m not sure which cards were prone to failure and also I want to avoid overheating by getting a too powerful card for my older 2.8 i7. But I was thinking of going with either the 2011 ATI Radeon 6770 512mb, 6970 1gb or 2gb? Is this the max I can do safely on this logic board? I want to be able to run OS catalina smoothly and run video games and video editing/rendering in final cut pro

Save your pennies!

The MXM GPU boards used in the 2009 through to the 2011 models all face the same issues of heat breakdown. The problem is two fold:

  • The apps & games required more performance than what the graphics boards at the time could offer
  • The cooling system where pushed beyond what they were designed to offer.

Just compare the cars we had in the 50’s and what we have today 60 MPH was pushing it back then with a standard sedan, Today with a low end car we can push 100 without breaking a sweat! Graphic services has likewise made large strides in performance!

So… Getting back to your desires “Run OS catalina smoothly and run video games and video editing/rendering in final cut pro” You really need something much more powerful! I would buy a used 2015 27” iMac and then look at loading up the RAM and putting in a PCIe/NVMe blade SSD if it has a HDD or Fusion Drive.

As an example I do image processing knitting multiple images into very large backdrops. My 2011 27” iMac just can’t handle it, I use a 2013 MacPro with 32 GB of RAM and a 2 TB blade SSD. And its still runs hard with an eight core Xeon CPU!

While I’m sure you are not going to push your iMac like I’m pushing my Mac Pro you still need to consider what is needed.

That explains it. So would you say that I’d be better off to just sticking to High Sierra and forget about upgrading the GPU in this old machine? So far I upgraded the Ram to 12 GB (which is upgradeable to 32 GB) so I could change that or also opt for a SSD. Because I am still on the original 1 TB HD.

What if I don’t use this iMac to run games, but only use it for Final Cut Pro? Would that still be pushing the cooling beyond its limits on an ATI Radeon 5670 512mb? Or can that video card handle that at least.

I also was afraid of getting something too powerful & even though the 1GB/2GB looks nice, that’s what I feared, it might be a bit more than what an old iMac can handle.

I still feel like these older iMac’s still have a lot of life left in them, and I want it to last as long as possible. So you think my set up for the 2009 Core i7 with 5670 512mb is best to keep it as is?

@acenase - I've pushed my 2011 27" system to its limits! It has 16 GB of RAM and two drives a 500 GB SSD and a 2 TB FireCuda SSHD. It's now on its forth GPU board the other three failed! I currently have a 2 MB Radeon HD 6970M.

It's used now to mostly manage my image portfolio as well as schematics and board views when I'm fixing systems. As well for writing and image composing on what I want to do for a backdrop working with my customer. And lastly, offer my music!

It just can't do much more without risking the GPU. I had gotten new boards while they could be gotten. Today all you can get is recycled parts which is iffy on how much life left they have. I've also cooked my GPU boards each a good four times each until I couldn't get them to work any more.

Hope you are seeing I'm pushing an old Ford Mustang onto the todays highway expecting it to go 75 MPH which is just can't sustain for long stretches! I go to Canada and as far as Chicago for my shoots.

Don't put any more into your system if you are planning on pushing it with games or video editing. The OS is not the killer its the hardware that's limiting you the most. FYI my iMac is still running Sierra as I don't want to run APFS on my SSD.

APFS is just too chatty for SATA based systems to work well. It was designed for PCIe based drives. Stick with HFS+ (Sierra) or make sure you enable the HFS+ switch in the installer to not upgrade the drive when it see's a SSD.
