Why does my iPhone X shut off when squeezed?

Everything works well, except if I gently squeeze the front and back near the center it instantly shuts off. This can also happen while it’s in my pocket with nothing else in the same pocket. After it shuts off it won’t power back on until it’s plugged into power.

Do you put your phone in your back pocket? I’m wondering if it’s causing the layers of the boards to separate due to flexing when pressure is applied.

EDIT* Now that I think of it, I wonder if it’s an issue with the charge port flex. I once replaced the charge port on a X and about a month later the customer came back with an issue where it would shut off if you put too much pressure towards the top right of the phone. I opened it up and was stumped for a few minutes. But upon inspecting the screen brackets I noticed one was bent. It was cutting into the charge port flex and when you applied pressure it would cause a short and restart the phone. I bend the bracket back and replaced the port and he hasn’t had issues since then.

I carry my phone in my side pocket. I did get it used, so unfortunately I don't know its history before I got it.

@ihihbs how long has this been an issue? Odds are someone just sold you their problem. You could send it to a board repair specialist to take a peek at it. If they can't fix it, they usually only charge a return shipping fee. But 95% of the time it's repairable. I recommend you send it to Jessa at iPad Rehab or STS Telecom. Both are excellent choices. And keep your data backed up. You don't know what's wrong with it and it could escalate into a bigger issue so make sure you back up.

Thanks for the recommendations. I just recently got it and have had issues from day 1.

I have this problem with my iphone x nobody at Apple knows why told me to buy a new phone Problem does not appear unless i put it in my pocket Im getting rid of it before I smash it up

Follow up: I was able to get a refund. I kept going with my 1st gen SE until the 12 mini came out (long live non-oversized phones!). I’m still using the same SIM card, so that wasn’t the issue. I’m guessing the PCB may have been delaminating just wrong that pressure in the middle caused the issues. The previous owner must have been a back pocket phone user.

I also had this problem and when I turned 3D-touch off it seemed to be fixed. Later on I turned it back on and everything seems fine now.

Another solution:

I had a similar problem during an iPhone X repair. When I clicked / pressed the screen into place, the phone shut off.

I noticed that the edge of the battery was scratched. The black covering had scratched/peeled slightly, revealing some metal. And I theorized that pressing the screen near that area was causing the problem.

I covered the scratch with a piece of electrical tape and it solved the problem.
