I replaced my macbook battery because it was dying immediately after unplugging. I used it for awhile with the power cable duct taped to the laptop. Yesterday I finally got around to replacing the battery and it’s doing the exact same thing - dying immediately after unplugging.
Is there anything that can be done before buying another battery and testing my luck again?

I would recommend you check your ports. I suspect one of the connections is not working properly try using the other side. Using a USB-C power meter like Satechi USB-C Power Meter should help isolate which is a bad port or if the systems charging logic is really the issue.
How about installed this gem of an App CoconutBattery and take a snapshot of the apps main window as well as the battery info tab and post it here for us to see iFixitでの質問に画像を追加する方法
That way we can be sure you have a battery issue Vs something else.

When you replaced the battery, did you remember to supply a new battery daughter board cable? These are necessary for the machine to recognize the battery. You can see what the cable looks like in Step 10 of this guide MacBook Pro 15" Touch Bar 2017 バッテリーの交換

Thanks for your reply! on my first attempt at repair I actually broke the clamp/hinge to the cable that you referred to in step 10. my second attempt yesterday I hot glued the daughter board cable in place. Sounds like you figured it out! I'll look into what a repair of that hinge might require.
