Bad SSD? Or overheats? Freezes after clean install of OS High Sierra.

Hey Guys,

I have a bit of a problem with my 2009 27” iMac.

It has been shutting down halfway through botting up. I then booted into recovery mode and was able to do a clean OS install on the iMac then booted up no problem.

Then as I use it, the iMac just freezes (but the mouse still works) and I won’t be able to do anything until I force reboot it.

Sometimes, there are some graphic distortions onscreen (only during boot up), could this be due to overheating?

I’m considering changing out the SSD as this might be the problem?

Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks

OK, I see the problem! Here’s the spec sheet for this drive: Intel 510 Series SSD Product Specification

This is a fixed speed SATA III (6.0 Gb/s) SSD, your system can only support SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drives!

This drive is too fast for your system! You would need a SSD which is either a fixed SATA II (3.0 Gb/s) drive or an auto sense drive like the Samsung 860 EVO which is able to sense the systems I/O speed and match it. We can see this by looking at the spec sheet where the Interface line tells us: SATA 6 Gbps Interface, compatible with SATA 3 Gbps & 1.5 Gbps interfaces

So you will need to replace the Intel drive with another drive, and you want to review the drives spec sheet to make sure it offers support for SATA II (3.0 Gb/s)

Hey Dan, thanks for the suggestions, I actually found a solution that was causing my iMac to freeze up. I believe it has something to do with SAFARI, or any browsers at all. I followed this guide

Quit and reopen Safari and note that there is a new 'Debug' menu. Use it to select the following options:

Debug > Drawing/Compositing Flags > Disable Canvas Accelerated Drawing

Debug > Drawing/Compositing Flags > Disable Full Page Accelerated Drawing"

after that, the Mac does not freeze up anymore. However, does this mean that something is wrong with the GPU or any hardware since it can't handle these functions? The Mac freezes up too when I am using other browsers as well (chrome, Firefox).

Regarding the SSD, I am still considering replacing the SSD anyways since the one I am running is not compatible and quite slow like you said. Thanks for the help!

No, that's just still the mess the drive is causing, as now your web browser is not caching (not using the drive to store).

You need a get the correct drive! I've seen this quite a few times. Fleeting issues where cleaning the drive of its files makes it appear the problem is gone.
