2nd ssd in optical bay is detected by disk utility but doesnt work

Hello all!

My iMac died and I took its Kingston 480gb ssd out and put it in a caddy and into my 2012 13’ Macbook Pro.

Disk utility sees it, but does not see any partition, and finder does not show it.

When i look SATA / SATA Express in the complete system report under “about this mac”, it shows the Kingston drive as well.

So, any ideas what i will have to do to have it working? Do i need to format an used ssd to make it work?

Thank you very much!

What was the macOS your iMac had and what is the macOS your MacBook Pro has?

Hello Dan.

The dead iMac was running High Sierra, and the current Macbook is on El Capitan.

OK simple problem!

Your SSD has APFS file system which your MacBook Pro’s macOS has no idea about as its still based on HFS+

So what to do??

You will need to upgrade your 2012 13” MacBook Pro system to High Sierra that will allow the systems EFI to be updated so the system can read & write your SSD’s APFS file system.

The other option is to reformat the SSD to the older HFS+ file system but anything on your drive will then be lost!

Now the rub! APFS is really intended for PCIe based drives not SATA. Your system will run better with the older HFS+ file system. As this is a second drive you’ll want to copy off what you need to and then reformat the drive to HFS+

Thank you very much, Dan! Good to know its a simple problem.

Kinda tricky, thou, because i think i'll have to format the SSD. The iMac is not really dead, its yet dying (it restarts randomly, more and more often... and its got a gpu history, so i think thats the problem... given i spent a good money on bringing it back, already, i decided to sell it as it is...). Anyway, i dont think i want to take it out of the box and open it again, reinsert the SSD to save the only one file i would need, an article i revised recently and have just a partial backup.

I'll give it a try later today, and post back to confirm it works.

Thank you again!
