The buttons don't work and the volume stays at 100.

I have a RCA 46” LCD FULL HDTV. MODEL#46LA45RQ.

The buttons don't work and the volume stays at 100, I have a remote but it fights to change the volume. I can't change input or anything. I would greatly appreciate any possible help.

Hi,

Assuming the TV is no longer under warranty, disconnect the power from the TV and then remove the back cover from the TV.

Locate the cable coming from the control button board on the side of the TV to where it plugs into the TV mainboard.

Gently unplug the cable from the mainboard. Make sure that there are no latches etc that may be securing the connector plug in place and also do not pull out the cable by tugging on the cable wiring. Grab the cable plug and gently remove it from the connector.

Once it is disconnected, reconnect power to the TV and turn it on using the remote control and check if the volume and all the other remote functions now work OK.

If so, you have a faulty key controller control button board - example only

Don’t forget to turn off the TV, disconnect the power and replace the back cover etc after you have finished testing that all is OK with the button board disconnected i.e. don’t leave it open until the part arrives,if you decide to replace the part.

Be safety aware - there is exposed lethal voltage when the cover is removed and the power is connected.

@jayeff The same thing happened to our TV and i opened up to see what was up and the buttons were not fully plugged in, the cord was just hanging there and the buttons box isn't kept in place by anything so it just moves around, I have a feeling my mom damaged it the cord or the box while she was using a......knife to try to get the box out. The tv speakers are stuck on 100 and the remote works kind of, you the thing is that the channels switch in their own and the volume button on the tv and the remote don't work so do you think that perhaps the wire is messed up. My mom should have waited until I woke up to start messing with the tv I'm afraid she made it worse.

@Soy Sauce

Disconnect the power from the TV and then check if the button board cable is correctly inserted into the button board and also into the mainboard

No doubt the IR receiver will also be on the button board but possibly not if the button board is on the side and the IR receiver is on the front of the TV

It may however connect via the button board to the mainboard

If the IR receiver connects directly to the mainboard you may be able to disconnect the button board cable and just use the remote to operate the TV.

If the IR receiver connects via the button board then the TV won't work properly until perhaps the button board is replaced.

This is hopefully where the problem is because if the TV still had power connected to it or even worse was actually switched on and working when the "repair" was attempted the problem may be in the mainboard, but try the cheaper option first of replacing the button board (search for the board number of the button board) as no doubt there will be no schematics available online (I've never found any for RCA TVs anyway - you may have better luck)
