Issues to avoid when buying 2nd hand iPhones for repair

Im currently trying to developing my skills in iPhone repair, so i’ve been trawling thru the 2nd hand iphone market for spares and repair handsets hoping to find some easy fixes at a recent….screen/battery replacement type jobs, mainly as a hobby more than anything else.

I’ve been looking at handsets from the iPhone 6 up to the 8 plus.

Its obvioulsy a minefield of unearthed issues, so i was wondering what are some of the biggest issues to avoid? What are some good questions to ask?

If you are only prepared to fix parts issues on the iPhone e.g. dock, screen, and battery I don’t think it is feasible unless you can see the phone. If you buy from online market places beware as they will advertise a phone “just needs battery”, “will not charge needs new charging dock”, ”reception drops out needs new antenna” or “needs new screen”. They might need those parts but more than likely there will be motherboard, liquid damaged or activation issues as well.

On the other hand if you want to get into the board repair side you can buy anything cheap and if you can get it to work it is a bonus if not it will be experience.

If you are buying from online market places ask the seller.

·         Has it had liquid damage?

·         Is it network and iCloud unlocked?

·         Has it got any other symptoms?

Stay away from liquid damaged phones if you are planning to resell.

Thanks for the reply Chris. Im only dealing with £20/£30 handsets at the moment, so not the end of the world if i am sold a lemon.

Having said that, id prefer not to, so i'll try and ask as many questions as i can beforehand, mainly around the liquid damage.

Thanks again
